I'm going to see Bonnie "Prince" Billy in April...

what the hell should I really immerse myself in? I've always enjoyed his stuff, but haven't gotten into his catalog with any depth.

Whatdyarecommend?

I want a reuben.

the first rule is that most things palace are better than most things bpb

get lost blues and other songs (singles comp by palace music), then viva last blues, then there is no-one what will take care of you

then maybe joya

i see a darkness anyway, i'm sure you have that already. other bpb albums are only good for one or two songs each

Nothing/everything 02-03-2009 07:52 AM

well, if you want to know what to expect live, you might want to check out "is it the sea", or "summer in the southeast".

He's awesome live.

I'm having a hard time finding lost blues and other songs online.

Thanks for the recommendations though....yea I see a Darkness is great

edit: nevermind, I found it.

bonnie prince billy is the devil's music.

House of Bread 02-03-2009 03:53 PM

Lost Blues is great! Thanks for the recommendation. I don't think I would've really checked Palace Music out.

publius clodius 02-03-2009 04:44 PM

it's one of my favourite albums of all time

i saw him last year, he played all (then) new songs from Lie Down in the Light, and then i see a darkness. i was kinda disappointed, but a good experience all in all.

I thought he was Christian?

publius clodius 02-05-2009 11:42 AM

he isn't, at least he didn't use to be

Mo 02-05-2009 12:02 PM

I wasn't sure, since there are tons of "Oh Lord"s and "God"s in his lyrics.

rolmos 02-07-2009 04:14 PM

I'd say yo also give Viva Last Blues, I see a Darkness, The Letting Go, and BPB Sings Greatest Palace Music a listen to get a very good idea of his catalog.

More Brother Rides / Horses / I am a cinematographer, etc.

Great versions, maybe even superior to their Palace counterparts.

publius clodius 02-07-2009 04:59 PM

the original version of horses is one of the top 5 will oldham recordings, fuck, maybe one of the top 50 recordings of all time for me

how dare you take the lord's name in vain

publius clodius 02-07-2009 05:09 PM

how can you prefer this

to

this

that makes me sad man

Nothing/everything 02-08-2009 09:42 PM

i just had one for lunch. it was awesome.

Seriously, the second version/video of horses is so fucking great. It basically has all oldham elements i love so much. The ramshackle chords, the lyrics, his voice breaking and cracking. Beautiful song.

do it and I'll cut your throat

publius clodius 02-10-2009 01:46 AM

this is why i often feel ashamed to say i like will oldham. i like him for entirely different reasons than most people. i think stable will is probably his defining work (both versions)

smashingjj 02-18-2009 01:09 PM

I don't like him! Take that!

publius clodius 02-18-2009 02:34 PM

are you on some sort of crusade against the things i like

to destroy the little bit of positivity i present on this board

smashingjj 02-18-2009 02:44 PM

fuck him and xiu xiu.

and alastair cuntbreath.
