whats a reasonable amount of cash to have saved to move out?
 

i'm at $860 so far
i feel like i'll need about $3000 or something
and hopefully the hours at my job will be a lot consistent by then

it would be cool to have a basic understanding of basic life skills and finances at the age of 28

get into a place that's already established was always my way of keeping the costs down. that way you don't have to buy all the furniture, pay setup costs for utilities etc.

General theory is to have enough cash on hand to cover three to six or so months of living expenses.

seems a bit excessive?

i mean if you have a job, and steady income, why do you need to have 6 months saved?
once you cover your setup costs (deposit, first months rent, utilities) the big costs are out of the way.

see about renting in someone's house or apartment. thats the lowest stuff you will find and will make it easier to move. i know being around strangers is weird but it can be a good thing too

otherwise if you are getting a lease and putting down a big deposit etc, definitely i'd say you need more

If you lose your job or get injured (or even have a major unforeseen expense), the emergency cash reserve allows time to live without income.

Yeah this is all relative to how you want to live. Don't expect to have such a cushion when you first move out....it will never be "safe enough" anyway. You're probably fine

I mean $860 is not enough unless you live somewhere real fucking cheap/are looking for an adventure on the streets IMO, but you probably don't need whatever huge amount of cash sppunk is implying either.

when i used to live with my parents i pulled like $500 together and crashed at a friends place for 2 or 3 months. then i was able to pull together enough money for a (shitty) apartment. but i got a job during the ordeal. otherwise it wouldve been a disaster

make sure you move within walking distance of downtown of the town you live in

I would think 2k is enough.

Keep all of your receipts for a month, tally it up. Add on top of that any bills (rent, utilities). Save twice that. But that's a prepared move. I've never actually saved up to move. I've just gotten the initial amount out for rent, shelled out and hoped from the best.

It's all about income. Is it steady and is it sufficient? When I moved in with my gf we had full-time jobs with decent security that had good income and health benefits.

If you're working part-time and you could get hit by a car some day while you're riding a bicycle, then I'd have a few safety nets in place, not just cash.

I'd say have enough cash for the deposit and two months of rent and utilities, you should be good if you have a job you can count on tbh. You'll be fine.

You just have to follow an alternative suggestion by attempting the Struggle lifestyle. Basically you're currently living as a fat cat with things already provided for you. (I'm assuming)

But you can choose to make things difficult by sleeping in the the back of your car in a parking lot, think of it like like camping out. Eat at 7-11, get a gym membership solely to shower everyday, you can still do what you did in the other thread in the shower but remember its in public, brush your teeth, maybe get a workout in.

Than your left on your own, trying to find a better paying job for your expenses through talking to people showing that determined look in your eye, or going to the library for your internet time. You'll be in a shitty state and want to change, but you can't go home, you have to struggle b/c there' no going back.

I think this is the type of mentality immigrants adopt when coming to the U.S. with little to none English, everyday is a struggle but they don't let the negative forces get them down and they save for the hope of a better tomorrow for their future spoiled American children.

Now I've tried living this lifestyle but only lasted 3 weeks. Worked 9-5 than nap at Barnes and Noble parking lot for 2 hrs than worked 745-345 at 2nd job. I enjoyed waking up from that nap, and having the most vivid dreams ever.

It felt good going to sleep everyday feeling exhausted, waking up and being greeted by the cold, and for those 3 weeks I felt so alive...

Everyone has that will power to change and succeed just got believe in what your doing is best for you. Enjoy.
