Seriously... Fall Out Boy has some really good power-pop on their earlier albums

I always hated this band because of their whole emo fashion style and everything they stood for, but I've revisited some of their earlier works, and there's some genuinely great power-pop work buried beneath the lamer songs.

These tunes here are melodic gold. If you were anything like me and stuck your nose up at em, I really suggest giving these a listen. Good melody writers.

I don't particular like that style of singing, but this guy does it really well, I'll give him that. I see they're on tour as I passed by the marquee at the Oracle in Oakland. I guess its still good to see a rock band able to do arena's these days.

Fuzzy's nostalgia for power pop is almost as bad as his nostalgia for soft rock. He longs for the days of Cheap Trick. Fuzzy how come you don't like any of the good stuff that was coming out in the 80s like the darker / more emotional synth pop or post punk? Everything you like from the 80s was corny. Which is why I sometimes think you are trolling.

Cheap Trick are great. Get fucked.

Catherine Wheel 09-20-2017 12:39 AM

I have to retract my statement because he did say recently he likes Men at Work and the Police. And neither of those groups are that corny. He doesn't lose any cool points for liking those bands.

But still power pop and soft rock are pretty awful.

FlamingGlobes 09-20-2017 12:52 AM

Again, Cheap Trick are great. Please get fucked ASAP.

FlamingGlobes 09-20-2017 12:53 AM

I mean, this is America. If you don't like Cheap Trick, why don't you leave?

You're honestly going to tell me that Tea in the Sahara and Murder By Numbers are just as cheesy and corny as anything by Cheap Trick? You're a fucking moron.

Elphenor 09-20-2017 04:37 PM

You're more frustrating than fuzzy to me because you like the most tepid examples of an exciting genre vs. just liking straight garbage

Elphenor 09-20-2017 04:38 PM

You're next door to something actually good

Catherine Wheel 09-20-2017 04:47 PM

I know Comsat angels and u2 aren't your thing but hardly anyone who likes post punk considers them to be tepid. Comsat Angels and u2 both did eventually sell out and start making pop but before that they were excellent post punk bands.

Elphenor 09-20-2017 06:44 PM

You guys listen to the same stuff you did in high school I've moved on to Drake and Billy Idol

I think comparing Men at Work to the Police is a stretch. Is this some Aussie thing? Why not mention Midnight Oil while you're at it, geez.

Yeah, it's generally not my cup of tea either, but he creates some nice harmonies and interesting melodies. The guitar interplay works well with it too.

They definitely have more shit songs than not. But when it works they're like a much more interesting/talented version of Blink 182 and that provides for an uplifting listening experience every now and again.

FoolofaTook 09-20-2017 10:31 PM

I am listening to Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage.

Dwell on that Fuzzrodianite.

At this juncture in my listening journey I'm currently not really into the darker, depressing type of music. I'm all about the sheer uplifting stuff right now and the 80's shit does that to a tee. I'm not saying it isn't "corny", but I almost have some sort of nostalgic appreciation for the corny factor (if that makes any sense).

I am always broadening my horizons though, and most recently I've been listening to Television, and while I can appreciate their influence, the music doesn't really do much for me at this point in my life. Who knows though, 5 years from now it might be exactly what I'm wanting to listen to.

FoolofaTook 09-20-2017 10:36 PM

Are you going to see Boris or what?

fuzzyroes 09-20-2017 10:39 PM

But back to Fall Out Boy, just listen to that chorus in the first video I posted (the Gin song), It's absolutely perfect, and the minuet differences to enhance each following chorus really help add to the excellence of it, and ensure that it doesn't get repetitive.

Men at work don't sound like the police to you? Both play reggae and new wave. Both singers use fake Jamaican accents. That's like saying comparing echo and the bunnymen to u2 is a stretch. Men at work might not even exist without the police.
