Recordings that prove Darcy killed it on bass
Here’s a couple where the bass levels are really high, so her playing is very present.
Really shredding the groove in Siva, and her control of dynamics is A+. She locks in really well with jimmy here. https://youtu.be/HrxkiQTJQo8 Rehearsal footage of SNL cherub rock, again high volume and just owning the groove https://youtu.be/yFUJQuCCgnE Sorry I can’t embed for shit. |

maybe d'arcy was the secret |
Billy:
"It’s hard to get… the Pumpkins’ sound. If you can bottle it, it’s sort of predicated on the idea the guitars are clearly on top and ahead of the drums; the drums sit in the middle, and the bass is a little back, so it has an impact and wide-scope sound. That’s the sound that I like to hear. Maybe it was developed through playing with D’Arcy and the way she played. I got used to that feeling, and so I’ve looked for that feeling ever since." |

I've always thought the whole "Darcy can't play bass" thing was just plain sexism. "D'arcy couldn't play her parts on Siamese Dream so she's obviously just eye candy" -despite the fact she played thousands of shows just fine.

except that James was always thrown in there too
|
i thought the argument wasn't so much that D & J sucked as it was Billy was 10x better and could get a recording in say 2 or 3 takes when the same part might take them 8 or 10. a big deal in the era of purely tape recording
in that regard maybe it's no coincidence that the era they were brought back in on as far as studio work is concerned was also the era we started hearing about Pro Tools  |

As we all know, our dude could barely figure out which end of the guitar was which at the best of times |
my theory is that during the Gish days, Billson was way less obsessive/compulsive and was legit just going in there and nailing the takes, whereas James & D'arcy may not have been as comfortable with their parts or weren't playing consistently enough to have it work on record.
when it came to SD i feel like Bill's obsessive tendencies probably sky-rocketed leading to shit like the aforementioned Today intro session as well as the fact that Butch essentially said he would have some extreme trepidation ever working with Billco again after that one |
but hey, that's just one Sad Machine's opinion!
|
The way she played was lazy and chunky in all the right ways. Jack is a studio musician. Lame and boring. D'arcy being involved means it will be better automatically.
Its been good as of late but would be better with her. |
Yeah billy has definitely said in many interviews that he would spend countless hours overdubbing guitars to get the timing just right. I’ve worked with bandleaders like him. They are a pain the ass...constantly acting like everything they do is perfect and everyone around them sucks. I’ve seen more than enough footage of sloppy playing, flubbed notes, and out of tune bends to know that billy was by no means a virtuoso musician on a completely different level than Darcy and James. He’s just a cock

I'll throw my 2cents in on the studio thing. I own a small recording studio here in Tulsa. I've recorded somewhere between 400 and 500 unique bands. In all my time I have witnessed this white coat syndrome for musicians. They can be phenomenal players that bring the house down in a live setting and then forget how to count to four in my studio. Watching the 666 videos a million times I really don't see this being the case with D'arcy.
