the united states, what a trash heap.

JokeyLoki 09-29-2011 04:24 PM

It doesn't surprise me that you think internet petitions do something.

Banana 09-29-2011 04:28 PM

I'm not saying it will do anything because all chances are that it wont.

But to not try is to concede to how things are.

Eulogy 09-29-2011 04:30 PM

politicians won't do it, but we're going to get a constitutional amendment

these people haven't really thought this through, have they

the only thing we can really do is wait for antonin scalia to die/retire and make sure it happens when there is a democratic president

Nimrod's Son 09-29-2011 04:48 PM

This is a thinly hidden attempt to keep incumbents in office. Something like this floats around every 4 years or so, always perpetuated by the party in power.

Yeah, nothing of that sort is in there.

"No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, campaign contributions to candidates for Federal office shall not constitute speech of any kind as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Nobody can donate money to a candidate. How are the challengers supposed to relay their names, positions, etc? Oh, that's right, they're not. Everyone knows the incumbent though.

Eulogy 09-29-2011 06:07 PM

Oh. That's dumb.

Money needs to be limited, not eliminated.

Eulogy 09-29-2011 06:08 PM

I stopped reading at "Constitutional amendment," btw

It's the only way you can eliminate the Supreme Court's decision that a contribution is protected by the First Amendment.

But you can't amend the constitution without politicians. Lots of them. So it's a dumb thing to say "politicians won't do it" and then say "we're gonna get a ton of politicians to do this!"

I already covered what needs to happen to be able to move toward overturning citizen's united. A lot more feasible than a constitutional amendment.
