I don't want to be that dick who asks him if anyone's ever told him that before, because I'm sure a lot of people have. He has a bigger frame than Michael Stipe and prob weighs 20-30 lbs more, enough to not be "skinny" but definitely not fat.

I imagine when you look like someone famous and its accidental, you probably don't tend to like that celebrity and hence dont like being told. Though I had an ex that kept being told she looked like Bjork. It was true and she didn't mind being told (it happened so much shed actually finish people's sentences "you look like..." "bjork, i know"), except she was also thicker than bjork (whos not thick at all) and once a guy actually told her, "you look like fat bjork". The worst? I think he meant it as a compliment still.... His brain probably meant to remove the fat part, but his mouth didn't. She wasnt really fat either.
