Can Billy play bass?

MarquisInSpades 02-07-2018 11:40 AM

He sounded alright on Gish and Siamese Dream.

themadcaplaughs 02-07-2018 12:29 PM

Like most bass players who mastered guitar first, he is not the most inventive bass player, but he gets the job done functionally and plays parts that serve the song. Even Gish, the most bass heavy album, still has bass settles behind the guitars the majority of the time. When Billy wrote daily posts on the Nexus about writing and recording Monuments to an Elegy, I remember him making some jokes about how unoriginal most of his bass lines were.

Although Nicole played during a horrible era of the band, I always admired her blend of more "functional" playing (like Billy) while also knowing when to make her bass stand out, without sounding over the top like Melissa's bass did.

SUBMITTED FOR CONSIDERATION

FoolofaTook 02-07-2018 02:02 PM

Takeshi plays bass and guitar. On the same guitar.

Corgan's Bluff 02-07-2018 02:19 PM

SUBMITTED FOR CONSIDERATION to James

Disco King 02-07-2018 02:20 PM

No, Corgan cannot play bass. He can never remember the names of the strings, and he has to put number stickers on the frets so that he knows where he is.

He is also yet to build up the necessary calluses.

MarquisInSpades 02-07-2018 02:20 PM

Man.

I'm buying Rocksmith as soon as I can afford it.

I was going to post that I find Rocksmith to be a really handy little tool for anyone who's trying to break the habit of playing videogames and wants to make the transition to learning an instrument.

Then I figured you'd post that my father has or had a handy little tool

So I just saved you the trouble

You're welcome

i suppose he can play well enough. i mean no one really listens to SP for the bass playing. i'm 100% sure he's not going to be the one playing on tour, though.

ilikeplanets 02-07-2018 03:43 PM

if it's not a hired touring bassist then it will be jeff. i'm not sure why people often consider playing bass a demotion. bass can kick some serious ass.

At this point I would consider being in the Smashing Pumpkins a demotion

T&T 02-07-2018 08:58 PM

so that's why jeff sticks around...

remember when zwan was a 4 piece and pajo was on bass?

Corgan's Bluff 02-08-2018 12:36 AM

PAJO was fucking great on bass. Even when he changed to third guitarist...

MarquisInSpades 02-08-2018 02:15 AM

I've like, $20 haha. Every time I save up money I just end up spending it on books. I bought a fuckton of books 2 days back. Spent like, 95% of what I had.
