farewell concert and break up

why exactly did they decide to break up in 2000? obviously, billy and james had a non-existent relationship at that point, but they were still fucking awesome. was it artistic reasons, or was the band cooked at that point?

billy, jimmy, and madm could still rock though, with or without james imo.

wtf

Reyngel 12-02-2011 05:03 PM

The Britneys of the world.

DaveKShape 12-02-2011 05:14 PM

obviously it was because james and d'arcy couldn't play, and they had really inconsistent live shows.

you are the sp historians. a fan should come here to inquire about these events.

CrabbMan 12-02-2011 08:26 PM

The break-up was probably devised by ancient aliens that visited our planet and left Billy messages which he received in his guitar via the microwaves from the pyramids.

Actually, those messages are contained in the genetic codes of whales, as well as a few ancient libraries around the world (including Machu Picho and the paws of The Sphinx),

albums sales were dropping
jimmy got thrown in jail
d'arcy left for drug problems/refusing to seek help
james started to hate billy for some reason

the band was falling apart and billy knew not to continue it any further. if only he had left it that way.

??? 12-02-2011 10:39 PM

because 2000 was an epic year to finish on, with plenty of astrological/mystical significance. they went out at the zenith of millenium fever, just before the party was truly over with the advent of 2001. you wouldn't want to break up the same year that 9/11 happened, its just bad karma. you want to give people a good 9 months at least to get over you before the main event happens.

Ironically, that would be a more legitimate line-up than the current one of Billy + 3 nobodies trying to desperately carry on the SP legacy. And Billy, Jimmy and MadM would probably profit from it more than each going off on their own solo tangents like they are doing now.

*sigh*

It's a shame Jimmy can't stand Billy now because that means it'll probably never happen now. Out of our Minds was on par with anything the Pumpkins are putting out these days anyway, maybe Melissa is better off on her own...

pale_princess 12-03-2011 11:23 AM

i dont' really think jim & madm care about profiting. melissa in particular is self-funding the majority of her projects. most of em aren't really my cuppa tea, but she is going after her own vision on her own terms without $ being the objective and i respect that.

bill's wishes the sp name was making him richer nowadays.

are you seriously comparing the sp break up to 9/11?

great poster 12-03-2011 03:43 PM

it's a conspiracy

If it was, we wouldn't be forking out $70 for two CDs we bought a decade ago.

I know I'm being pedantic, but it would be better to have some more "original" band members in the new SP.

The current line-up makes Axl Rose and Dizzy Reed's GNR look genuine.
