Cotillions Thread

This thread belongs to bright_doom, not me!

There is a fair amount of really, really great stuff on this.

At like 17 songs it's much less cohesive than Ogilala but fuck me if most of the material isn't stronger

That title track

paranoid 11-22-2019 12:42 AM

Sounds fresh, inspired with a nice touch of classic corgan.

Big Truck05 11-22-2019 12:44 AM

Whoa, Billy! Whoa!

paranoid 11-22-2019 12:48 AM

Billy does a better job at producing than Rick Rubin. Makes me look forward to new SP big time.

paranoid 11-22-2019 12:59 AM

The instrumentation on coliseum is faaackin gorgeous.

wHATcOLOR 11-22-2019 01:11 AM

i'm listening to frightened rabbit at the moment, but once this album is over i'll switch over

Elphenor 11-22-2019 01:20 AM

Gooch 11-22-2019 01:46 AM

How’s the dropped consonants and vibrato???

bright_doom 11-22-2019 02:04 AM

Wtf, someone starts a new Cotillions thread and locks my original thread without even asking me?

Fuck this place, I'm going to Shad0wland.

enthusaroo 11-22-2019 02:41 AM

This album sounds like diarrhea.

But you already knew it.

amoergosum 11-22-2019 02:49 AM

Why was the other thread locked?

enthusaroo 11-22-2019 02:52 AM

it's cool to hear D'arcy did the backup vocals.

Forgotten Child 11-22-2019 03:02 AM

Loving this album. First listen I thought it was a bit too long and monotonous, but it gets better once your familiar with the songs. Great work with the back vocals.

6 + 7, The spark, Cotillions, Apologia, Neptulius and Anon are my favourites.

not too much vibrato, the dropped consonants are still annoying enough.

somehow the music is suddenly a lot better than the past few albums so that's a minor thing.

I'm surprised that it is and it's a pleasant surprise, still I can't see myself listening much to a Billy Corgan album in this day and age.

VoxUpDoc 11-22-2019 04:21 AM

might even be a link or two in the previous locked thread...

behived 11-22-2019 08:44 AM

I don't like it at all...

fuzzyroes 11-22-2019 09:08 AM

It's generally not my cup of tea, but I still appreciate the quality of the songwriting and the instrumentation. It's definitely passed all expectations.

I think that 30 day trip around the heartland was just what he needed to spark some inspiration

fuzzyroes 11-22-2019 09:09 AM

Katie Cole sounds great, too. It's crazy how much better this record is than Ogilala.

Tumora 11-22-2019 09:55 AM

Dancehall, "feather that ass"

amoergosum 11-22-2019 10:05 AM

johncg 11-22-2019 10:13 AM

Wow this a lot less negative than I expected.

Manuglass 11-22-2019 10:23 AM

Very surprised about all the positive comments here! Half way through the first listen, sound quite OK.

Can't shake the felling that 99 Floors would have been a perfect fit for this album... :(

I'd agree with this, and I think it was your comment in the old thread that a little more percussion would have helped a few of the songs.

There's too many songs and some of them drag on, but it is far and away better than Ogillala, which I thought was terrible.

The first couple of tracks are honestly pretty bad and I was discouraged, but when Jubilee hits, the energy picks up a bit.

Part of the problem for me is that both his guitar strumming and his piano chording are pretty boring. It's what really killed Ogilala and the added instrumentation help for sure.

Strongest lyrics in a long, long time as well. The singing I'm just not a fan of his modern style, and the dropped consonants are all over the place.

tl;dr: it's pretty decent, which is far better than I expected.
