D F H V N - Ordinary Corrupt Human Love [2018]

How we feelin? I took a minute to warm to Honeycomb but it's grown on me hugely, i'm really liking the direction on the new one too. Loving the old-school BM 4-on-the-floor Venom type riffs and the heroic feel-good Dinosaur Jr bits too. I feel like they keep finding new ways to attack their juxtaposition of grim and flowery that keeps it engaging.

smashingjj 06-13-2018 07:38 AM

it's alright but it's no solara

ninsp 06-13-2018 09:46 AM

This new song is fascinating. They’re finding a way to be more “black metal” than Bermuda or Sunbather but also sound more shoegazey at the same time?

ninsp 06-13-2018 09:54 AM

This dumb board is caring about Solara

While Deafheaven is releasing classics weekly

House of Bread 06-13-2018 10:46 AM

Only listened to Honeycomb once and loved it. I'm gonna hold off until it's released.

Still not really black metal-y enough

Old stuff had tremolo picking and black metal screeches

That’s why I like Deafheaven right now. They hit the sweet spot between real Black Metal and real Shoegaze. Idk

Take Honeycomb for example.

Song fucking slams and has this weird nostalgic happy black metal cvlt shit going. But then it goes all Siamese Dream. Shits glorious

FoolofaTook 06-22-2018 02:11 AM

nope. the first lp, souvenirs d'un autre monde, is totally shoegazeish. the ecailles de lune got black metaly. voyages was again shoegazy, and shelter was pure shoegaze.

kodama is their most black metal album, besides the very first lp (pre-secret), which isn't really alcest.

i know my alcest, bitch.

FoolofaTook 06-22-2018 02:12 AM

see?

Sonic Johnny 06-23-2018 03:20 AM

Yeah Alcest is cool and it's definitely metal-adjacent but yeah, nah, not actual black metal sorry

FoolofaTook 06-23-2018 04:14 AM

my bad. black metal-y. in some parts. some riffs. some apocalyptic screams.

there we go.

Mals Marola 06-26-2018 12:44 PM

Maybe I'm just speaking as not a true "metal man" but my problem with this band was that, for as multi-faceted as the rest of the musicians were, the vocalist was a one-trick pony. I guess that's the appeal for some people but damn the dude is just turned up to 11 at all times even when the music doesn't call for it

That’s what’s cool about the band though

The contrast

Deafheaven have this weird thing around themselves which if you wanted to be unflattering you could probably call a gimmick and not be entirely incorrect - the whole transgression of being a pretty black metal band that leans hard into both things is the nexus of what they do, and they're quite self-aware in their approach to the whole thing; think about the Lana Del Ray aesthetic video for 'Honeycomb', naming songs "baby blue" and "canary yellow", this is stuff done at least in part to antagonise grim kvlt BM d00ds?

So I can kinda get why people get off it when they interrupt a really top-notch black metal dirge for some snotty dinosaur jr riffs and a wah-wah solo, or about their decision to deliver what are basically 21st century Morrissey lyrics ("My world closes its eyes to sex and laughter";"my love is a bulging blue-faced fool hung by the neck from sunflower stems") in a more atonal version of the dude form Converge's voice. Personally but it doesn't bother me because i'm basically the exact target audience cause with the exception of Morrissey the artists they crib from is more or less a laundry list of my favourite bands, and I reckon they do all of it extremely well.

PuzzledMuzzle 06-27-2018 01:10 PM

Black Metal = "We get it, there's no singing, intelligent musical discernment, or performed emotion".

Sonic Johnny 06-28-2018 02:43 AM

my mans at the very least those second two points are wild inaccurate

redbreegull 06-28-2018 04:29 PM

puzzledmuzzle is a professional moron

FoolofaTook 06-28-2018 04:47 PM

varg sings

Sonic Johnny 06-29-2018 05:01 AM

They literally teach shit like Emperor at Berklee cause of how crazy the chords are

Sonic Johnny 07-05-2018 05:52 AM

stream

Sonic Johnny 07-05-2018 06:53 AM

They went full Mellon Collie. I'm dead. This is fucken amazing. Possibly their best record.

pavementtune 07-05-2018 09:30 AM

this is fantastic. I still frequently listen to Sunbather, this might be my album of the summer.
it feels like all my favorite little things about them combined.

did they tour in your parts, sj? saw them live once, that is...special. one of the greatest live acts I have ever seen.

To quote Luke Skywalker, "Every word of that is wrong"

ninsp 07-05-2018 06:05 PM

This is gorgeous. Wow.
It has this airy, young vibe...but it’s still black metal.

redbreegull 07-05-2018 07:12 PM

marijuana and I are very excited for our premier listening session later tonight

smashingjj 07-05-2018 07:20 PM

Fascinating how puzzlemuzl keeps finding new exciting lows time and time again
