Other than Billy, who is most responsible for SP's success?

Honestly my vote goes for Bill Corgan, Sr., because without his neglect and abuse and influence, Billy never would have had the insane drive to seek fame and musical success.

Jimmy is a close second, however, as I think his musical contributions are just as important as Billy's songwriting.

The only thing I will add is that I truly don't think D'Arcy's importance to this band can be overstated. Her strength of character was a stabilizing force against Billy's excessive narcissism and zealously bad taste. I have no doubt that without D'Arcy to rein him in we would have easily had some cringe worthy "I WILL BE SPECIAL K" moments from 1991-1998 that may have easily soured his legacy. Sometimes the most important people in the band are the ones whose contributions are not so obvious.

Anyway, I'm sure I forgot someone important. Don't hit me. This thread is meant to incite discussion more than anything.

Well...HAVE AT IT.

Jimmy, no question about it for me

Without a drummer like jim, bill woulda remained forever a bag of limp riffs and cringey yodeling

Mals Marola 01-30-2019 02:22 PM

it's a close race between Jim & Butch for me. at first I was just gonna say Butch since he went such a long way to get Bill's songs just right and consequently become huge, widely-appealing singles. but Jimmy's own production choices (changing snares between sections of Today, for example) and ability to serve back just the right track to whatever Bill threw at him was just as important

everyone else on that list was important to the quality & character of the band but Jim & Butch were the "musical steroids" Bill needed to get the Pumpkins on the same level as the grunge big 4, commercially & technically

I voted for James because I like him and the aura he brought, and he helped get me hooked. Simple reason, but surely other fans felt the same way and technically that is contributing to success.

ilikeplanets 01-30-2019 09:01 PM

Now musically it's definitely Jimmy and Butch, but James has that subtle magnetism that was irreplaceable

johncg 01-30-2019 09:05 PM

He does. He was also a cofounder with Billy do hey who knows how important he was in the big picture.

Modern90's 01-30-2019 09:19 PM

jimmy for reasons stated

Modern90's 01-30-2019 09:19 PM

tough choice on everyone else, though, really.

houseofglass11 01-30-2019 10:09 PM

Really though, you gotta give Bill some credit himself for writing such senescent songs from 1991-1995 even though that word doesn't mean what took thinks it does.

I googled it once and was like WTF!?!

Mals Marola 01-30-2019 10:34 PM

you should have simply used it in casual conversation instead

that's what i did!

Mals Marola 01-30-2019 10:35 PM

i think it's time we took (hehe!) the new definition to Miriam Webster and made this shit official

fuzzyroes 01-30-2019 10:40 PM

I actually googled it cause I was using it in a post and I wasn't sure if I was spelling it correctly and then I noticed the definition and was like " what in the name of all things holy!?!?"

enthusaroo 01-30-2019 10:43 PM

Mike Byrne (Bareclubbin')
