that is actually mind-blowing to me.

It's weird to me as well, especially because without even reading that quote, I think it's fairly obvious these guys have listened to some Pumpkins

FoolofaTook 02-04-2019 04:17 PM

yes. of all the bands i have listened to, alcest comes closest to that special, otherworldly classic tsp feel. also i think neige uses some similar tricks on the guitar. i don't know what its called, but billy used it a lot on songs like cherub rock, 1979, xyu, geek usa, tristessa. something like:

x-x
x-x
x-x
7-9
x-x
5-7
x-x

and you move that shit around. lol i haven't played guitar in ages. anyways neige uses the same form for his heavier, faster parts.

FoolofaTook 02-04-2019 04:17 PM

foolf presents: worst guitar tab ever!

Mals Marola 02-04-2019 04:23 PM

FUCK IT

emilem 02-04-2019 04:28 PM

it's a hendrix chord.

Mals Marola 02-04-2019 04:30 PM

Also, that bottom E's probably just open (0-0) but i get yer meaning

redbreegull 02-04-2019 05:35 PM

yeah, it's an octave, and Bill usually allows the low E to drone. definitely part of that signature pumpkins guitar sound.

FoolofaTook 02-04-2019 07:32 PM

ah right the bottom e is open for stuff like xyu and cherub rock. then he slides that shit around. sounds awesome.

my point was that neige uses it too. i love neige.

houseofglass11 02-04-2019 10:15 PM

It's an octave, you plebe.

As a guitar player, nothing about the playing really impressed me. I did only listen to 1 album, not even sure which one, one Took recommended. Had it on my Ipod for awhile. I sincerely didn't find anything all that interesting about the playing.

I mean, they'd probably be cool to see live, and they definitely have some chops for whatever my opinion might be worth.

It's fairly obvious that Silvesun Pickups "have listened to some Pumpkins" too and it doesn't change the fact that they suck ass.

They do not suck!

brothahi4L 02-05-2019 08:20 AM

Most people go like: who are the smashing pumpkins?
They used to be a great band in the 90s but havent released a good or well received album since 2000.

Honestly they are history.
Shiny was a silly album with hits like seek, maltesers and alienation.
I gave them a last chance with scheiss shiny but obviously the magic has been lost long ago.
Now i can say: i used to be a fan. Sold all albums from 2000 until now.
This band sucks more than i'd admit

True, 1979 sounds quite different when you don't play the low E string. First Pumpkins song that made me realise how important it is to let the low E drone as you play the other chords. Definitely makes an impact on some of the cleaner Pumpkins tracks.

you have a conservative old man mindset that prevents you from expanding your tastes or appreciating anything that deviates even slightly from what you have enjoyed in the past. That's a failing, not a virtue.

FoolofaTook 02-05-2019 09:19 PM

man the guitars in alcest are fuckin EVERYWHERE. all sorts of effects and riffs and cool little background solos. ah... yes!

FoolofaTook 02-05-2019 09:20 PM

mos def my fav band. no doubt.

houseofglass11 02-05-2019 09:37 PM

Shelter was a masterpiece. Didn't like Kodama as much. Check out his former bandmates band, Lantlos. Deafheaven gets all the hype but these guys are better:
