Torrent/FLAC easy to understand guide

With the new tour and open-taping policy, I figure we'll be seeing alot more torrents, and more people will want them.

Here is an awesome Bittorrent FAQ:
http://dessent.net/btfaq/

FLAC files:

All around awesome program: http://thor.prohosting.com/roh0205/

You can play them with:
Foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org, my choice)
Winamp (www.winamp.com, with plugin)
iTunes (with this mod: http://playlistmag.com/news/2006/07/11/ogg/index.php)

You can convert with:
Foobar2000 (have the LAME mp3 codec installed for best results, if making mp3)
Flac frontend (flac.sf.net)

MAC USERS:
use this: http://sbooth.org/Max/

remember, most tapers don't want you to make mp3s of their shows, except for personal use (your ipod, etc). You should never make mp3 files of a show and put them online unless the taper gives you explicit permission to do so.

and please, DON'T EVEN TALK ABOUT THIS in the forums. some of you saw what happened today with our friend BillyKicker, who is now banned.

I also reccomend using uTorrent.

Spankarine 05-25-2007 12:14 AM

it's too long, i know... and all that.

but imagine this song as a single...

IWishIWasBlank 05-25-2007 09:00 AM

What about .shn files then? And... is the community now leaning towards .flacs as opposed to .shns?

Spaceboy88 05-25-2007 03:00 PM

XACT is all you need to decode Flac/SHN on Mac.

As for playing them, I think VLC Media Player does that and everything else under the sun.

MisterSquishyHalo 05-25-2007 05:07 PM

What plug in do I need to play this on winamp?

redbull 05-25-2007 05:14 PM

the flac plugin

MisterSquishyHalo 05-25-2007 05:24 PM

Ok I got the flac plug in.

how do I play it?

There is a folder, with a bunch of files..?

redbull 05-25-2007 05:26 PM

you need to put it into the plugins folder and then restart winamp. I havent used winamp in a long time, but it will have a bunch of .dll files like "lame_in.dll" and "lame_out.dll"

MisterSquishyHalo 05-25-2007 05:33 PM

Yeah I got that now. I can listen to it :)

Now I got to burn it to mp3..so I can put it on a cd so I can listen while I drive.

make a wav out of it, not an mp3. you wont lose quality that way.

Sebastian 05-25-2007 05:36 PM

Here's a site that pretty much sums up why I seeded the file the way I did, named the files the way I did, etc.

BUt the wav is much bigger, it wont fit on 3 cd-r's will it?

44.1k/16bit wav is the audio-cd standard, when you burn a cd from mp3 files, the burning program just converts them to wav and then burns that.

to convert, load the files into frontend, choose an output directory, and hit "decode". MAKE SURE THAT "DELETE INPUT FILES" IS NOT CHECKED.

I already made sure of that. Don't want to delete those bad boys ;)

It doesnt give me a choice what to decode into..unless it was a wav file before hand.

redbull 05-25-2007 06:32 PM

it should automatically decode to wav

MisterSquishyHalo 05-25-2007 06:52 PM

Nice thanks!

What is the fading thing about? Should I keep those on my cds?

redbull 05-25-2007 06:59 PM

they're optional, its up to you whether you like the cds to have fades at the beginning and end or not

Boycott Graceland 05-25-2007 08:35 PM

for people on macs (redbull, maybe edit this in to your top post?):

FLAC encoders:

Max (i highly reccomend this program) - http://sbooth.org/Max/
MacFLAC - http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/MacFLAC.shtml

FLAC players:

VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

shn is old and shouldnt be used any more. but people need a way to play shns of older sources.

Oh what? Max does FLAC? I didn't even think to try, I looked in its formats list and didn't see it in there. Man, I feel dumb now!
