Catherine wheel: the British smashing pumpkins

If you look at their discography and Wikipedia entry it almost reads like a mirror image of SPs original run. Especially how similar ferment and chrome are to gish and Siamese Dream. I actually think they are more similar to SP than QOTSA or soundgarden

Rob Dickinson = less pretentious Billy Corgan lol

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 01:09 AM

It seems like the biggest difference is that sp sold albums stateside and cw didn’t. But it seems like they really did come close to matching and mirroring them as far as their sound and the hits off the first three albums

Mals Marola 12-26-2018 01:20 AM

referring to yourself in the third person and plural form?

now this is an episode of The Sharter Typology i do not wanna miss!

FlamingGlobes 12-26-2018 07:38 AM

“Fluctuating levels of success” is what it says for them. Which means years with big fame and other times not so much. You could say same thing for SP

smashingjj 12-26-2018 12:38 PM

yyyyeah

ninsp 12-26-2018 03:20 PM

Catherine Wheel sucks

The person and the band

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 03:24 PM

When you say cw sucks you’re basically saying sp sucks. Lol You know what the only differences are between Chrome and Siamese Dream? The singing

That’s stupid.

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 03:29 PM

How is chrome almost song for song not like Siamese Dream? In every way? There are maybe 1 or 2 songs that don’t match up

Mals Marola 12-26-2018 03:31 PM

Cathy these are some spicy comments but god damnit you have me checking out this Chrome album just so I can see what the hell yer talkin about

Mals Marola 12-26-2018 03:33 PM

ok so, this first track sounds nothing like Cherub Rock - it does however sound like some Oceania track that I don't remember the title of. Better than that track, granted, but even so

the 6/8 time sig doesn't really help yer case either

Mals Marola 12-26-2018 03:34 PM

i guess it is somewhat ironic (only in the context of this thread) that Bill said he ripped the Siamese big muff tone off of a Catherine (no wheel) practice he'd walked into one day or whatev

Mals Marola 12-26-2018 03:36 PM

this sounds more like what i've heard of Afghan Whigs than anything post-Gish SP

actually, i wanna go listen to Afghan Whigs now :stan:

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 03:46 PM

Cw on chrome were a grunge band with shoegaze / hard rock influences just like Siamese Dream. The guitar tone isn’t exactly the same but it’s similar.

Elphenor 12-26-2018 03:47 PM

maybe SP are the American CW

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 03:49 PM

Ferment and Gish aren’t as heavy and have a lot of the same influences

Nobody knows who Catherine Wheel are. This is a verifiable fact.

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 03:59 PM

That’s like saying no one knows who dandy Warhols are cus they don’t sell albums here. The Dandy Warhols are the American oasis or the verve cus they still have hits here to back it up

smashingjj 12-26-2018 04:00 PM

feels like I'll need to delete some track by track comparison threads soon again

Who?

FlamingGlobes 12-26-2018 04:27 PM

I'm not entirely convinced you're not just making names up.

Catherine Wheel 12-26-2018 04:39 PM

I don’t think rob Dickinson really cares that he never sold albums in the states everytime he cashes those radio royalty checks for black metallic and crank or collects streaming money for those songs

Disco King 12-26-2018 04:42 PM

Catherine Wheel is a good band, but the only similarity they really have to the Pumpkins is that they are both shoegaze-influenced and like fuzz pedals. I wouldn't peg them as some Pumpkin doppelgängers, though I can see why one would like one band if one likes another.

Look, a lot of people listened to MBV and Slowdive in the '80s and liked them.

Disco King 12-26-2018 04:47 PM

I honestly would have thought that more people on this forum would have heard of the band Catherine Wheel, and I really hope that their reception here isn't tainted just because some dumbass took his screen name after them.

buzzard 12-26-2018 05:10 PM

I probably ruined Ufomammut for a lot of people, come to think of it.

It's kind of you to play along with this social experiment of his but really, you don't need to.

redbreegull 12-26-2018 06:00 PM

smashing pumpkins aren't british?

redbreegull 12-26-2018 06:01 PM

it's right in the name, they're smashing
