...Said Sadly appreciation thread

More and more it's becoming my favorite James song. All the best James flavors come together: the country-western guitar noodling, the strange song structure that somehow feels absolutely right, the truly cheesy yet somehow deeply affecting lyrics, and a world-class emotional crescendo near the end

And wow, that Nina Gordon! Who would've guessed their voices would blend so sweetly

Anyone else has appreciated this one??

It's great, but it never stuck with me. Probably feels the least like an SP song out of all the MCIS / TAFH tracks. Which is odd, because it's definitely not the weirdest...

Ram27 03-07-2017 03:14 PM

Yeah I love it. Sublime tune; James' country influences are killer

Ram27 03-07-2017 03:17 PM

also what's that weird crunching sound around 1:27?

SomaPhreak 03-07-2017 03:19 PM

It's a magical little song. I remember being amazed at how a band could put two good songs as different as Bullet and Sadly on a two-song single. Perhaps this is where Billy's fixation with "lover" began ....

always loved the song
but wished james could hold his falsetto pitch better.

borrows a lot of guitarwork from Blew Away

I love this song. Sad dark soft... pure mcis.

Ramdust 03-07-2017 07:53 PM

It's EASILY my favorite James song.

yes to all of this.

James' tracks were always more artfully arranged and IMO stand up better now that we're all adults. I put this on quite a few mix tapes for friends back in the day

I thought that was Jimmy singing with James.

Fucking Nina Gordon

Ram27 03-07-2017 10:39 PM

Tied with "Go" for my favorite James song. It made me happy that Billy said he thought it was James' best song in TAFH liner notes.

I remember an interview with Billy from 5 years ago where he was saying that James was really into Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown at the time of recording Mellon Collie. Was alt country hip in 94/95?

Love Said Sadly, but imo, the version of One & Two that's on the Mellon Collie boxset is James at his best.
