Porcelina is better than than Ruby fact!

Who's with me? I can literally feel the waves crashing over me. Jimmy couldn't have played it more perfectly, plus the 1984 lyrics.... instant classic! Ruby may have more dynamics with the bongo outro, but Porcelina is perfection.

block of the night!

Used to be in his mind he was everyone

But now he’s nothing but a body in his mind

This is b/c since 2002 he hasn’t been taking it’s what u take that makes it right

Shallowed 05-03-2020 06:35 PM

Agreed

Bingo!

Joey Goldberg 05-03-2020 07:25 PM

they're pretty much on the same level, tho gun to head I would choose Porcelina

on that token I always found it odd how often they've played these back to back

YA5H 05-03-2020 07:26 PM

Porcelina is SP at their absolute best, it's not even debatable!

YA5H 05-03-2020 07:30 PM

When I show non fans what puts SP on another level than any other band it's Muzzle then Porcelina. The best one two punch!

YA5H 05-03-2020 07:44 PM

Siamese dream is a masterpiece! But the diversity and balls of Mellon Collie is why I love this band so much!

YA5H 05-03-2020 07:50 PM

Love him or hate him, Billy was all about taking artistic risk's
And it payed of massively with Mellon Collie and the box set.

first thing i thought of when i heard that song

reprise85 05-03-2020 07:56 PM

bout to listen to both of these to give my ultimate decision

redbreegull 05-03-2020 08:07 PM

I say Porcelina edges out Ruby slightly

reprise85 05-03-2020 08:14 PM

thoughts on porcelina:
intro is obviously amazing
jimmy's cymbal work, jesus
fucking bridge is essential
IN MY MIND IM EVERY ONE OF YOU might be the best moment in SP history
less impressed by the other aspects of the song. they are pretty but the lyrics don't speak to me very much. i can imagine some kind of beach walk or something and it's nice
this outro is pretty great though with that sustained shit. could do with about 10 more minutes of that.

ruby:
piano intro makes me excited
picked intro/verse guitar part is crucial
lyrics definitely sound like longing feels although i don't quite get the 'innocence' bit
breathing underwater... and living under glass is fucking perfect
porcelina bridge is better (than the first ruby bridge)
that chorus though
revelations of fresh faced youth second bridge or whatever. not really that important, don't quite find it adding to the song
we're forever frozen, forever beautiful, forever lost inside ourselves. god damn man
night has come to hold us young part is nice.
long ass outro coming up
bass is great. leads are great. atmosphere is great. not quite as good as porcelina gets, but very good
mcis coda is really great.

sorry chaps, ruby wins

reprise85 05-03-2020 08:16 PM

porcelina is like a 7.5 and ruby is about 8.5

in my mind i'm everyone is best part of either song though

Ram27 05-03-2020 08:31 PM

agree with reprise

porcelina has its great bits [intro cymbal work, 1984 lyrics, IN MY MIND-->gnarly guitar sound and drum riffage, outro solo > reworked rocket]

but ruby has sections like that but even better [intro weird piano thing, THE NIGHT HAS COME, the amazing studio outro, the amazing live outro, iha's lead work on the jungle bridge]

i don't really care which is better really. it could change on the day or my mood or what's stuck in my head when i wake up. there's no such thing as objective best on this matter

LaBelle 05-03-2020 08:35 PM

Ruby is the best, still one of the few pumpkins song I'll sneak into a playlist here and there.

Not having a great sounding live version on the aeroplane bonus disc was the biggest crime.

LaBelle 05-03-2020 08:36 PM

also thread is pointless without a poll

Disco King 05-03-2020 11:14 PM

I feel like "Ruby" is about not truly being in love with somebody, but staying with them because it's comfortable and you're scared of being alone.

"Porcelina," I don't know what it's about. I feel like it's got more imagist lyricism intended to paint a picture and transport you to a scene instead of being "about" a subject. But if it's about anything, it's about having somebody who is such a light in your life they they make all the pain and ugliness of life worth it.

The "youth is wasted on the youngggggggg" part in Ruby right before the solo kicks in is just as good as that part of Porcelina tbh

"epics" are one of the things SP have done BETTER since the reunion.

There's only really United States, SFAS and Oceania that have been released officially but they're better and more varied than the SP1 epics imho.

The drumming on United States is god tier. SFAS has so much raw, real emotion. Oceania is.

i like Oceania, US is... good except the vocals kill it. SFAS is decently good.

Ramdust 05-04-2020 11:40 AM

Lol no. Gossamer and Superchrist were just aimless jams that went nowhere. SP mk-whatever has literally done nothing better since the real Smashing Pumpkins broke up in 2000.

redbreegull 05-04-2020 12:03 PM

I like Ruby a lot, but I've never considered it to be the end-all-be-all SP epic. I think the instrumentation is amazing but I think I like the lyrics/songwriting on Porcelina more.
