I'm not sure about all time, but I've made a list from this years best vocal performances, maybe we can discuss it in this thread.

There have been many great vocals this year, actually more than 10. Following are performances that didn't make it in my final list, but just as noteworthy:

Amy Winehouse for "Rehab"

She has proved she has the chops to sing jazz, this year she returns with the 2nd best soul pipes (2nd to Aretha Franklin) in singing the ole classic genre. Unlike the many forgotten singers gernre from the past century, Winehouse just sings with personality and a bigger-than-life voice that just arrests every one's attention.

Natalie Cole for "The Man With the Child in His Eyes"

Kate Bush sang the song like no other singer, but Natalie Cole had the adventurous guts to take this classic. As always, that unmistakable soul never fails to mesmerize.

Andrea Bocelli for "Can't Help Falling in Love"

There were two notable versions this year: the first one was sung by Katharine McPhee during one of the episodes of AI. The judges dissed her for being over the top without realizing that she wasn't the one who arranged the song. The second one I'm referring to is this version by opera superstar Andrea Bocelli. Elvis sung this memorably, but Bocelli updates it and carves a tender moment for himself singing in Englis. This live performance is just wonderful.

I'm From Barcelona (Emanuel Lundgren, Frida Öhnell, Cornelia Norgren, Philip Erixon, Micke Larsson, Johan Mårtensson, Anna Fröderberg, Johan Aineland, Martin Alfredsson, Erik Ottosson, Tina Håkansson, David Ljung, Christofer Olofsson, Daniel Lindlöf, Mattias Johansson, Tobias Granstrand, Emma Öhnell, Mathias Alrikson, Jonas Tjäder, David Ottosson, Maria Eriksson, Olof Gardestrand, Marcus Carlholt, Julie Witwicki Carlsson, Rikard Ljung, Henrik Olofsson, Jacob Sollenberg, Fredrik Karp, Johan Viking) for "We're From Barcelona"

I guess these 29 guys do not really know how to sing, but they surely sound really enchanting when they sing together. One of the most tender moments in rock music this year, even more tender than Anrea Bocelli. The singing is just too lovely to miss!

One of the best group singing in pop music in years. You may consider this as my 11th favourite from 2006.

Oh I just remembered about another one, Luther Vandross for "Shine"

"Your time, your time to shine
Shine, shine, shine, shine groove shine
Your time, your time to shine
Shine, shine, shine, shine it's alright"

The Freemasons succeeded in creating another gem, but this time the genius is not theirs alone: Vandross' vocal is one of the ingredients of this success. Imagine if in their sampling they had opted to use another vocalist, say Tom Jones ala 'Stoned in Love': the song would have been a total mess! Absolutely no one else in the current music scene could carry a tune as big as this one.

It really was a wise decision of instead covering Vandross' wonderful soul with all the mixes, the guys behind Freemasons opted to just build beats around the already excellent vocal. It would have been nice had this been done when Vandross was still alive. Seeing him perfrom this live would just have been phenomenal.

The whole vocal itself is mind-blowing-ly brilliant, but the parts when Vandross at the top of his lungs belts out 'Your time... your time to shine/ shine, shine, shine...' suspends all the singing in all of dance music as if it were the apex of all of them. It's the portion of the song where a dance fan who is into this form of dance music decides that the song is actually brilliant, no less.

This vocal is so good it's as if Vandross dug out of the grave and had his last and greatest moment. This is simply the best vocal in a dance song by a male artist this year.
