i've had a sitecom router for a couple of years now. i don't know an awful lot about routers, I set it up initially and didn't touch it much since. MAC filtering is enabled, but no other forms of security. everything accessing the router has its MAC addy added to the router.
everything has generally worked fine with the router for ages and it's been really quick. the only thing I've ever changed on it is enabling UPNP and changing the channel it was working on, to open the NAT for use with XBOX Live. the last couple of days though, the net seems to have been quite sluggish, and this morning I couldn't get online at all. After a bit of fiddling I called my ISP, there were no service issues in my area, they said that my modem was working fine and suggested unplugging the modem and router, plugging in and allowing the modem to initialise, then plugging in the router and starting again as they said it cured 95% of problems. did that, got connected to the wireless network, got online. later in the day I was online with the pc and online with the xbox. suddenly the internet connection got cut from both. I reset the modem and got online. a while later, same thing again. this time when I managed to get back online I downloaded the newest firmware for my router and updated it. then reset it. a while later, it drops all connections again. since then i've just been resetting the router when it drops, and then been able to get on for a short while before it drops me again. i can always access my router, it's just that the router cannot always access the internet. anyway it's still happening. still connected to the router, still dropping internet connection frequently until i reset the router. It's a sitecom MIMO XR (model WL-153 I believe) any suggestions? since this seems to have happened pretty suddenly after a long time without issue is it possible the router is simply old, worn out and needs replacing? |

In other news, I'm posting this for someone else who thought they couldn't post threads, when I think the problem is the board won't accept certain words in the thread title, and I think I've personally had the same problem. I'd like to know what the words are.

first thing i'd do is reset the router to factory default - not sure on that particular router how to do it but there should be instructions in the manual.

i didnt know if by doing that i'd have to start again by initially accessing the pc that's directly wired into the router at the moment, cause its not mine, its passworded and he's away out i guess i should just be able to access it via the router standard ip and admin/admin tho? |

im saying try to get one device working before you throw everything else into the mix. if you can turn on modem, then router, then connect to the internet and stay connected with your pc while your xbox/iphone is disconnected then its probably a setup issue. you made it sound like this is happening when multiple devices are connected

of course, routers sometimes go bad. what you're experiencing is pretty much a classic sign that the router is on its last legs. If none of that works, you may need a new one. luckily they're cheap.

Performing the following will allow you to determine whether or not the router is the problem, which from your description, appears to be the case:
From your computer (assuming Windows), go to Start > Run, type cmd and click OK. In the command prompt type ping -t google.com and press Enter This will perform a continuous ping until you press Ctrl+C to cancel. If you get a request timed out even as little as 1/10 times, your router is the problem. To verify this, hook your computer up directly to your modem and perform the same ping -t google.com You probably won't see any request timed outs. Now you know. |

Yes it is. I've replaced many routers/switches where intermittent connectivity and/or slowness was the issue and ping -t yielded "request timed out" even as little as 1/20 times. Replacing the router/switch almost always resulted in constant connectivity and speed being restored. I'm speaking from experience here. Of course there are other possible causes here, but what would you suggest?

Typically, an ISP won't say the modem's not the problem if they don't perform some diagnostics. Plus, one would need to verify, like I suggested, by performing the same ping test directly connected to the modem.
