ASHLAND, Ky. -- The "Duct Tape Bandit" left them laughing at Ashland's Shamrock Liquors.
Police said it was last Friday when a man entered the store, his head wrapped in duct tape except for eye holes and one for his mouth. Store manager Bill Steele had some duct tape of his own, but his was wrapped around a wooden club that sent the robber fleeing.
Store employee Craig Miller said he chased the man to the parking lot, tackled him and held him in a choke position until police arrived. Officers said an unidentified customer also helped.
Ashland Police Sgt. Mark McDowell said Kasey Kazee, 24, of Ashland was charged with robbery in the first degree. Miller said the thief also had a t-shirt pulled up around his head, which he said reminded him of the Cornholio character from the Beavis and Butthead cartoon.
Ashland Police Captain Don Petrella said Kazee did not carry a weapon during the robbery, but told employees he had one.
Petrella said a local EMS crew helped remove the duct tape when Kazee was arrested.
"We had assistance from our EMS crew," Petrella said. "They just snipped it with some scissors. It kind of peeled off kind of easy because of the sweat he was dealing with. It came off easier than we thought.”
Petrella said Ashland's weather had been hovering in the '90s when Kazee covered his head in Duct tape.
Steele said Kazee obtained two rolls of change in the robbery. Kazee appeared in Boyd County District Court Monday where he entered a plea of not guilty. He was ordered held in lieu of a $250,000 cash bond. As of Tuesday morning, he was still in custody.
After his arrest, Kazee told a local TV news crew police had the wrong man.
