Red face Creepy Frill Shark

Rare shark captured on film

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is about 2,000 feet under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week.

The Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, south of Tokyo, was alerted by a fisherman at a nearby port on Sunday that he had spotted an odd-looking eel-like creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth.

Marine park staff caught the 5 foot (1.6 meter) long creature, which they identified as a female frilled shark, sometimes referred to as a "living fossil" because it is a primitive species that has changed little since prehistoric times. (Watch divers swim with bizarre, ailing sharkVideo)

The shark appeared to be in poor condition when park staff moved it to a seawater pool where they filmed it swimming and opening its jaws.

"We believe moving pictures of a live specimen are extremely rare," said an official at the park. "They live between 1,968 and 3,280 feet (600 and 1,000 meters) under the water, which is deeper than humans can go."

"We think it may have come close to the surface because it was sick, or else it was weakened because it was in shallow waters," the official said.

The shark died a few hours after being caught.

Frilled sharks, which feed on other sharks and sea creatures, are sometimes caught in the nets of trawlers but are rarely seen alive.

That's pretty crazy - and really sad that it died

It's just kinda mindblowing to think that there's species so old that because they lived underwater they were probably able to survive any catastrophe that may have wiped out all other species.

I wonder what sort of prehistoric sea dwellers are out there that have never been seen.

Yeah no kidding, it really creeps me out but it's just so interesting.

There was this video I saw recently explaining theories of whatever catastrophe rocked the Earth and caused everything to become extinct - but it showed that even if it was something like volcanos exploding and all that (they found huge underwater mountains that had to be formed by volcanic eruptions under the ocean) that certain species could still survive in those kind of conditions underwater. To be able to survive living in water that's just pumping lava - those are some hardcore creatures.

I'll look for it because it was pretty interesting but I have a feeling that it was on the science channel and not online.

Psssh, we all know the world is 6,000 years of age and it was created directly in its current state by some gigantic humanoid omniscient entity that has the ability to think and reason.

God (though more reasonably Zeus) put it there.

I think extraterrestrials have made bases at the bottom of our oceans. I have no evidence to back this claim up, but I believe it to be true.

Me too, it's great stuff.

Actually I think it was during this show:

http://science.discovery.com/converg...thscience.html

It's 100 Greatest Discoveries and it was the Earth Science one. I think...I can't remember because when these shows are on they have like a whole marathon of shows about the same thing. Either way if you can ever catch this one you'll enjoy it.

I'm so in love with the Science Channel now - we just recently got digital cable mainly for National Geographic but I think I like the Science Channel even more.

If you get that channel, this is their schedule for this week
http://science.discovery.com/tvlisti...=SCI&hhmm=1800

You might be interested in "What Really Killed the Dinosaurs"...next week I think they start all their future stuff and I'm not really big on all that. I just like the prehistoric stuff and the space stuff.
