Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

how about some school admin growing some balls and standing up for the children's right to have a little fun?

how about the guy runs a school where 90% of the kids are on ritalin because of these zooey mothers and he has received some indication that one of them might sue over such an injury and his school cant afford it. i dont approve of the guy's actions at all, but he isnt the source of the problem. doctors cant afford to give their most honest medical opinion a lot of the time because of BS like this. personally i would have said the partents have to sign a huge waiver to let their kid go to recess and put the kids of the bitch parents who wouldnt sign in study hall for the period

i'm asking him to stand up and take one for the team. i'd be willing to lose my money, my job, even my career over something as stupid as this. fucking christ, america is dumb. you pretty much proved my point, that despite any common sense, america will roll over and take it if it means avoiding a financial risk. whatever happened to being reasonable, or even just fighting for your values?

if i were a parent of a child at that school, i'd sue them for endangering my child's health by not allowing them to get the physical exercise they need.

You know....my aunt and uncle have two kids who are....6 and 4 or something like that. And I can see them being ok with this. I mean, I'm not sure....but it wouldn't shock me.

And that sucks. My fondest elementary school memories involve me and my friends beating the shit out of each other in the snow in the winter and getting new scabs all over our legs every day in the summer. Soccer in parking lots was rough, let me tell you. But the winters were much more fun. We'd all take over the biggest mound of snow and see whod be the last one standing. I mean, sure, some kids got hurt and cried a couple times, but it was part of growing up. geeze. and this was only like 8 years ago. wtf is happening.
