I have to admit that I had never heard of this until recently. I'm kind of now fascinated with the ancient Chinese tradition of binding women's feet.
It started in the late 900s and continued until the early 1900s (it was outlawed in 1911 but continued to be fairly widespread until 1949). There are still many Chinese women alive today who had their feet bound as young girls.
The synposis of foot binding is that from a young age (4-6) Chinese girls would have their feet wrapped every day in this excruiatingly uncomfortable position, so that their feet would only grow to be 3 fucking inches long. Hell my big toe is probably close to two inches long. The shoes the feet-bound women would where were callled Lotus Shoes. It's just amazing to see how small they are.
There are several different theories or reasons as to why the Chinese males did this to the women, the most plausible of which is that they thought feet were ugly and this way they would not have to see their women's feet.
Also of note, the Chinese continued to do this even after it was banned by the government because it was tradition and the women - who were obviously emotionally warped - wanted to do it because it was a right of passage AND it meant that you were from wealth or at least not poor, because the peasent Chinese bitches could not have their feet bound since they had to work in the fields (the feet-binding kind of hampered their ability to walk properly, especially in later life).
