i have taped quite a few shows off of the board at various venues but often i
get distortion when the sound on the board peaks. its not that the levels on my dat are too high, its coming from the board this way. is my preamp overloading? has anyone else ever had this problem? any solutions?

the levels going to your deck are too hot; an M1 can usually handle board-level feeds on the line inpuut; D7/D8 usually can't -- get an attenuator.

You sure about that? The line input stages on those decks should be identical to that of the M1/D100 series. The A/D convertor is slightly different, but as far as the impedance of the input and ability to handle a +4dbu signal, they should be indentical. Any insight?

It's also going to depend on what cables you're using to hook up to the sbd. XLR cables can and will handle up to + 4db, and boards themselves handle a lot more than that. I've never had problems when I've patched with RCA or 1/4" cables. I've never had to use my XLR cables either, so I haven't used every possibility.

this has been posted on datheads in the past -- might want to try a search there. i thought it was on the sonic studios website; here's something from their review of the m1/d100:
...line input headroom is NOT A PROBLEM as the D100/M1 decks can take a full +4 dbv professional level line input (mix board) feed without clipping; this is rare to find in any portable deck costing less than $1500.
