Haha, you remember that? Yea, I tried to videotape zwan in St. Louis. Too bad Gooch foiled my plan. I got about 30 seconds of Endless Summer on tape before he came over and gave me a full patdown and hoarded my gear for the rest of the evening.

Been there, done that--12.02.2000, with enormous regret that I told anyone not to tape. Document the shows. Deal with the potential fallout later.

If anyone is worried about getting pinched by Frank, email me and I'll give you a step-by-step to keep him away from you and your tape.

I was there too. Luckily, my friends and I were already inside the bookstore looking around when the band came in, so I didn't have to make the bold step of entering. At the time they first came in, pretty much the only shoppers in the store were me, my two friends and Zwan. It was a good fifteen minutes before any fellow Zwan fans caught on that they were in there. Not that it mattered, that time wasn't enough for me to summon up the courage to actually approach any of them. All I did was pretend to shop and keep them in eyesight. I had no cool interactions like the people who came in later (like Choob and his camera, which I also saw.) It was still very cool though.

What Frank *means* by the admission that it won't be open taping is that he will be there with his Oktavas and mic stand, permission taping the band. Recording(s) will exist.

I have pics of everyone who tapes on this board...and have sent Frank profiles of them all...you cant win!!!

And as for 12/2/00...we didnt chicken out cus you said we gonna get our asses raped at the door...it was cus most of actually wanted to enjoy a show for once...Well Fresko was at the bar...but yeah =).

Anyway...the whole thing to this is there are a lot of legal issues involved because Zwan are not the only people preforming at these shows, and you would need to get premission from all the artist preforming and blah blah blah. But yeah...once again shows Billy being a coward because he's scared no ones going to like this new stuff...when we all know hes at his best when its raw. Some of the songs on the Machina demos are still my all time favs.

If Frank is told not to distribute his recording, then Frank shouldn't distribute his recording. I'm not going to beg and whine for it to get out. Frank would be a goddamned fool to risk his in with the band to pass around a show.

What I am suggesting, and what you are apparently too fucking dumb to understand, is that Frank should not be the only person taping.

Here's where you can stop reading, monkeyboy, because this might tax your brain a bit.

The goal here is documentation. What happens if 'Riverview' never gets played again? It gets lost. Frank having a tape of it that can't be distributed is no different than it not being recorded at all. Example: what do you all think of the acoustic version of "Promise"? Isn't that a great song? How about the first proto-Zwan show at Liquid Joe's?

It's no secret that I think Billy's probably the best artist of his generation. And to that end I think that his art should be documented as completely as possible. Billy doesn't want the show taped. I think documenting the art is more important than what he wants. I believe in the longview.

Bob Dylan was unbelievably pissed that the Basement Tapes leaked out, mostly because the stuff those tapes documented were works-in-progress or woodshedding. It wasn't art the 1968 Dylan thought was good enough to be released; it wasn't how he wished to be presented. Time has proven the 1968 Dylan wrong. Those tapes were such a revelation and insight into his art that almost 30 years later a respected rock critic wrote an entire book on what Dylan and the Band did in that basement.

I am not suggesting that these open mic nights are Billy's Basement Tapes. I am saying that we don't know what these 'sessions' will reveal, and we're all going to be very disappointed if something brilliant emerges and we have to hear about it secondhand.

And lastly, anyone mumbling about 'legal issues' is a tool. Since when have *any* of you cared about legal issues before? You don't give a fuck if Your Favorite Band or Your Local Venue allows taping. If you want the show you're right well going to tape it, and fuck the 'legalities'.

If you want the show taped, then tape the show. Frank is not Billy's security guard, nor should he be playing the role of hunting down tapers.

I think it's quite rideculous that we'd work against each other here by crippling other tapers. We all know Billy probably wouldn't have wanted us to tape most of the shows we have taped. Did we respect this wish? no, we wanted the music so we took action. Any of you out there who are all for this "lets do what Billy would want" thing are full of shit. How many people want MP? My guess is a lot of you, do you think Billy wants you to have it? Probably not, so will you turn it down once offered it? probably not.

Frank, your one concern should be to tape the shows and, as the band requests, hoarde the recording. If you do this there is no way you can get in any sort of trouble. I somehow doubt Gooch will get all over you if other people stealth tape the show, it's not your problem.

Im going to be disapointed if these dont get taped. I mean come on when has not having open taping stoped anyone.. And like D4 said, we as a community will regret not taping them later on like 12-02. Even with people saying not to tape 12-02 people still did.. There is at least 2 or 3 recordings of that out there, most are shit, but oh well.. Tape these people stealth it, it shouldnt be that big of a deal.. I dont even know why you are thinking twice about it..

ok. here's whats going on. the band told me to tell you guys that there is no taping. the reason why taping is not allowed is because of legal reasons. they aren't "zwan" shows. zwan shows are open taping. bc isn't even going to be at all of them. it's a regular open mic show where anybody can show up.

If you only took a minute to think about it, it would be so simple.

Sure, we can all agree that because of this the whole "hoarding" trip starts again.

But if someone is the only one to record something, it's pretty easy to call him a hoarder. If more people recording would have been there, this would be a non-issue. Think about that, and learn your lesson: go tape. I would, but alas, I'm a bit remote from those places.

Reflection:
At the moment, I'm not even into the April shows... I haven't had time and whatnot. The open taping policy is a blessing. I can get those shows at any time I want, great.

But now, oh shucks, one show got recorded, as everyone above here seems to know already (*shrug*), but isn't going down the mainstream drain. Damn.

How many people recorded it?

If someone recorded it, it is still that person's decision whether or not to let it out.

Agnew recorded that one soundcheck with 'Promise' in-house, and with permission. No one but a few have it.
Someone else recorded the same song from outside, and as it wasn't with any band-permission or anything, it got out. Never mind the quality, it got around.

There's an important difference there.

Please Jason, just respect that *in comparison*, for this one band, you ain't done shit.

We all love your recordings. We all love the things you've done. *I* do. Some of those transfers are truly gems.

But, I don't think DA deserves the scorn you bestow him with. The things that we've got far surpass the things we didn't.

people such as myself and many others on this board who record live music like to consider ourselves "tapers". its a pc term. we dance around he solid fact that we are BOOTLEGGERS. whether you like the term or not, it fits. i find it absolutely ridiculous that anyone would even question the legality of the situation. this was never a problem before. does billy want people to have this show? i personally think he would not care as long as no one was selling it. is it up to billy? no it is not. as soon as the sound exits his amp and enters the airwaves, it belongs to the people who paid to be in the venue and hear it. they are free to do what they wish with it. if they want to "save" it, no one can stop them. this is an argument with an obvious answer. if i lived in chicago, i'd be there with my hat on, and wires running down my shirt.

It can't be true! nevermind using a different username! Oh my god! D'ling every little 91 show off the hub huh? Yeah I got a few from the hub, traded for a few, the reason why I got a lot of those, and not alot of "new" shows, is that I wanted to collect the Gish era first, and then on to the other eras, but now I've grown tired of collecting. So would you just shut up and grow yourself a bootlist before talking about other people's lists? Thank you.

If you own gear and can attend any of these deals, you should probably try to stealth, unless you plan on doing a song yourself or something odd like that. Maybe quality will be worse than the recent open taping shows, but it's not a big risk to stealth (easy for me to say, but I know the worst that happens is usually loss of tape and batteries). Hopefully someone grows a pair and decides to go through with it; as long as Frank doesn't know you, and you know how to stealth, it shouldn't be a big problem.
