I've seen ads for it around Uni the past few days. What's it like? I thought the Alive EP was pretty decent.

I got the Feelers Playground Battle rerelease with some good live tracks and a couple of outtakes. Oooh, and the Frances the Mute (Decoder) 12'' (Mars Volta).

i haven't listened to much of it yet but it doesn't really seem to be anything all that special.

but if you like houdini you should enjoy all of the melvins albums. um, i have i think 5 or 6 and i like all of them. my favorite right now is probably 'Electroretard' which is actually some covers and reworkings of their own songs. good stuff. i've been listening to them a lot lately.

my initial exposure to the kinks was via their earlier awesome mod-rock. i mean this album, outside of what...one, two, maybe three ray davies-penned tracks? is just rock and roll standards from the 50's. but one of the billion reasons that the kinks are amazing is because their take on these "rock and roll classics" are always excellently played, have tons of energy and are thoroughly convincing.

A : small indipendant record labels (fontana for the early solo works and drag city released tilt)

B: offbeat music, listen to tilt and even scott 4 for example (one song is about stalin and another one about ingmar bergmans the sixth seal). it's baroque pop/indie pop.

ah yes ok, i just figured since you didn't know about scott walker there might be a couple of missing pieces in other places as well. i personally hate felt, what a terrible voice. the only thing good about that band was maurice deebanks and he left before lawrence started to write good songs (and that horrible organ player joined instead).

patrick
05-05-2005, 01:57 PM
felt was great in all of their incarnations, outside of that instrumental jazz album.

i hated lawrence/felt for a good year and a half or so...but one day, it just kind of clicked and i started loving them. his voice is great, though -- like the second coming of lou reed

have you heard the album "strange idol patterns and other stories"? that's from 84 i think. it's felt at their poppiest -- maurice hadn't left yet, and lawrence was trying to write hit singles. download "spanish house" if you haven't heard it

have you heard maurice deebank's solo album? "inner-thought zone" lol. it's great, actually. it's just more early-felt instrumentals pretty much

yep, heard it, that was the zenit of deebanks playing but it didn't help a lot. when it comes to basic songwriting, lawrence is not exactly a thom yorke or mark eitzel.

that depends on what you mean by songwriting. my definition of songwriting is the basic structure of the song, major and minor cords with vocal melody on top (with guitar or piano usually). if you compare radiohead songs (like just or karma police) with a song like sunlight bathe the golden glow, there's a huge difference in the amount of different chords used and complexity of the sequenses (that's spellt wrong, but you know what i mean). a great songwriter (on this level and in my mind) is able to combine a good vocal melody with a fairly complex structure of chords.

ten favourites (tell me yours as well)

the replacements
rem (mainly irs years)
nick drake
red house painters
joy division
radiohead
early suede
the innocence mission
american music club/ mark eitzel solo
the smiths

yeah i know. that's interesting btw, because i think most of those bands have very basic chord strucures (not necessarely a bad thing of course). if i'm not mistaken, a lot of jazz is based around simple chord structures and the real action is the soloing and the playing that goes on on "top" of it. maybe i'm wrong. devious j, were are you, help.

jazz tunes are like anything else in that there are great simple ones and equally great ones that are very sophisticated in terms of harmonic structure. it's the delivery of the melody and personality of the soloist that makes or breaks the performance of a standard.

also, in terms of rock, chord sophistication isn't proportional to the quality of the music. chords are meaningless. dylan, joni mitchell, neil young, tom waits, costello, lennon, etc. all wrote the bulk of their tunes with chords any guitar student would learn in a month.

i'm aware if that. as i wrote earlier, it's not which cords they use, it's the amount of different chords and complexity of the sequence.

an odd 70's hippie psych record, i guess. it's actually really good.

the guy that posted it on indietorrents had a lot to say about it:

"Ridiculously obscure early '70s private-press Long Island hippie commune psych record, with virtually no surviving information available. What IS known is that they recorded one other LP after this one, titled The School, and a 7" either after or between the LPs.

If you Google "People's Victory Orchestra" (in quotes) you get a snarky post of mine to Largehearted Boy, auction results for that second record (only $49!), some dude's record collection list, and a few references to WFMU playlists from two different DJs... and that's it. Seriously.

If you want a taste of this before downloading, one of the aforementioned FMU DJ's has linked his show by track; you can hear the spectacularly great first track on this album in streaming RealAudio by loading this: hxxp://www.wfmu.org/listen.ram?show=6297&drop=31&playtoend=1

Some rumors have it that the band playing on this actually count members of the Stones among their ranks, but these are, of course, unsubstantiated. What is certain is that this thing has a definite cultish vibe about it, so you Father Yod fans should take note.

While this IS a great record, it's no holy grail -- at least a few of these tracks are middling, somewhat generic early '70s psych, but for the mind-melting opening track alone it's worth the download.

I should probably mention that one of the two WFMU DJs who show up in that Google search is a good friend of mine, and happens to be the gentleman who turned me on to this record. I'll send him an email and see if I can dig up any more info and, if successful, post any findings in a comment below.

If any of YOU happen to know anything about either this record or this band, please post a comment; it would be much appreciated.

FWIW, I managed to track down my copy through gemm.com for $15, from a seller who clearly had no idea what this is; it was nestled amongst the usual Beatles rarities and a host of other mainstream titles. A search on gemm.com right now turns up one copy of the second LP (searching for "People's Victory Orchestra") for $66, and a copy of this title for $40, though you have to search for the album name, as the seller seems unable to figure out the name of the band."

There aren't any. Defining conditions for a masterpiece is impossible, the way i see it.

It's been ages i played Machina but i just did. When Heavy Metal Machine was playing, i had to think about your comment on good songwriting. That song has a shitload of different chords in the chorus, while Billy sings over it. It's a very bad song. Like you said, Joy Division made songs with incredibly few chords. Bob Dylan did. Neil Young did. They all made great songs.

yep, i dislike the beatles, neil young, bob dylan, the byrds and more.i don't like almost all of the "classic" 60's and 70's artists.
you might ask yourself : what's the point in talking about complex chord structures at all?

it's interesting to see which artists different people like and see if there is something that tie them together. raggae and 60's pop might look diffirent on the surface, but underneath the fancy stuff there's a core that is similar, perhaps.

I don't know what this has to do with me... but jazz is generally considered possibly the most complex style of music going. Everyone needs to be aware of the interplay between the lead melody and the backing, the general direction the music is being taken in and how best to make it all interlock. Also, jazz tends to go through modulations as a matter of course, ie constant key changes throughout the piece.

As for songwriting, a good song is a good song. A good songwriter doesn't need to be a good 'musician', the skill comes from putting a melody together with chords and lyrics and having it stand on its own. It's not an easy thing to do and that's why most people aren't composing classic songs within a month of picking up an instrument. Obviously that doesn't take anything away from those who can compose complex music, but they each have value on different levels

I hope you're referring to the fact that there's all sorts of dashes and underscores, and not the typical "YEW HAVE BAD TAYSTE BRAD!" response.

Those are all albums that have finished downloading, but I have yet to organize. Once I get around to it, I make sure all the tracks are there, "01 - track name.mp3", etc and then the folder gets named "artist name - album name (year)".

my girlfriend buys dirt cheap records, takes them apart (the cover, back, and the actual record), and tapes then to the wall of our apartment.

it's kind of neat.

Lilys - In the presence of nothing

well, flying saucer attack starts to look better compared to these guys.

It's not an awful album but you listen to something like "elizabeth colour wheel" (which is the highlight of the CD) and you get the feeling these guys probably ran over to the studio to record it right after listening to Loveless. It crosses the line from inspiration to imitation and just isn't good enough to let that slide.

It got me to give Loveless a spin again though.

at the drive-in- this station is non-operational: at first spin this is a pretty good cd (bearing in mind I only have "relationship of command"). Much more accessible music than the afro brothers new project (esp. FTM). Songs like "this night has opened my eyes" and "initiation" are almost shockingly generic straight-forward that it's an interesting listen. The DVD extra's are decent w/ some concert / action footage of the high energy band during one-armed scissor and invalid litter dept video is a reminder of how odd this video is (the almost laughable sudden shots of the stoic atdi in between the video images of the juarez slayings).

Architecture in Helsinki-In case we die: It sounded better on the first spin. Kinda loses some punch w/ repeat listenings for me but the CD starts off so well and peaks at "Maybe you can owe me". "It'5" reminds me of Phoenix. "The cemetery" is the only track I find skippable (part of the vocal rhythm flashes me back to Britney Spears in the zone harmony & it throws me off haha). I also don't like one of the girl's vocals..I thought Len made an appearance.

Talking Heads-The Name of this band is talking heads: basically my introduction to this band outside of "Psycho Killer" and "Once in a lifetime"...looking forward to it.
