I have been recording shows from the radio for the past few months (hives, jew, idlewild, marilyn manson, weezer). I am taking an analogue cable from the headphone jack of my stereo (it's only output) to the mic in on the MD recorder (Sony MZR900). I have to set the levels low because the recording distorts very easily.
When i transfer the md to my hard drive i take an analogue cable from the headphones of the md to my analogue soundcard and record with cool edit or cd wave.
After all this the recording has very noticible hum in the ********** (it is like this before the transfer to my hd).
Anyone any ideas as to why this is happening? My guess is all the analogue epuipment but if you have any ideas other than buy a digital soundcard i would appreciate it.

If you need an example of this sound d/l a hives song from me on the hub.

TIA

right on the money. get a digital soundcard and an md deck that has digital outputs. or get someone else to do it for you. i'd be more than happy to do it, as I shudder to think how many ppl circulate md shows transferred via analogue

You need to be recording to the line in on your md... mic in is for mics, not stereos!!! http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/wink.gif

2scoops - the hum is present before the transfer to my hard drive so although a digital soundcard will make a difference it will not eliminate the hum because it is already there (i think it is the analogue cable but it's all i have).

Pzane- the cable that came with the md only fits into the mic in, the line in the an optical line in.

Thanks for the help though, unless i start taping shows or using my cpu to record my band i will not be investing in any expensive equipment to remedy this problem but advice is still welcome as it is rather annoying having a "hummmmmmmmmmm" in the ********** of a nice show.

If memory serves me correctly, the line in jack functions as both an optical line in AND an analog line in. Try it.

hmmm ok i read that wrong i didn't see the radio part.

i get that same hum too. i always assumed that it was because the output from your stereo is analogue.
