Hmmm... anyone notice on this list that Pastichio Medley is listed at 6:59? It looks like that's the maximum length they'll list a song at... which makes no sense.

Hope and Mayonaise accoustic are new to me. Either way though, the positive is that this is definately not the project Billy's been going through the archives for. I mean, how could he possibly go through archives for songs that have been commercially released already? Well, 95% of it anyways.

Yeah, I was looking at number 112. Speaking of Mashed Potatoes... I had a feeling that's what most of these rarities and b-sides were going to be. I'm afraid that when we do finally get the box set (if we get it at all), it's going to basically be the demos from Mashed Potatoes. I'm not as picky as most, but to me, the sound quality of these demos is already pretty good, so that'd be pretty disappointing to me.

This news isn't disapointing, it's just almost-irrelevant! So chill. It's too cool that people will be able to buy SP online, as millions now buy their music. TSP will get more fans, and more money and gasp, more recognition as time crawls foward.

My point is, if you're not buying itunes SP tracks, this news is irrelevant and not worth folks being a bitch about

yeah if the vinyl ones are digitally mastered i'd buy a few.
i haven't actually heard not worth asking either.

also, are the 1979 mixes just straight capella and instrumental mixes of the original track or are they the stupid "techno" remixes from the 1979 remix CD?
it'd be cool to make mashups with 1979.

List On Fork
03-25-2005, 05:32 PM
1. Why are the album tracks here?

Because these are most likely divided into the separate singles -- i.e. the tracklisting for the Zero EP runs from Zero to Pastichio Medely.

2. Why isn't the Moby remix of 1979 here?

Moby is a douche.

This is not so good... there could be much better b-sides in that list.

Billy's sitting on top of all the super rare stuff, you can bet that will not make it's debut as something digital. He'll release it as a boxset or something. You were really expecting never before heard SP songs to be put on iTunes as lossy 128kbps MP4 files? Come on people.

They were giving them away with Machina at HMV, even a week after the release. I was pissed because I pre-ordered it from HMV.com for the exclusive EP and it didn't even arrive til Thursday, then my bro walks in a week later and gets it cheaper and still got the EP.

how do you get the tracks? do you need an iPod? and is it lossless? :(

As for the iTunes B-Sides/Rarities, I'll wait and see how the box set is. Then I'll bitch.

I was listening to the previously unknown songs from Judas tonight, and it struck me how much I enjoyed those songs at this point. I was not a big fan of throwaways like Because You Are and Soot and Stars when they first came out, but now I am glad to have them. I hope that a few similar leftover songs surface on a future boxset. Given what we know, it seems likely that there are at least a few of them left out there ....

You can only play the songs in iTunes or on an iPod. You use iTunes program to log into the iTunes store, then you have your account set up with a credit card or paypal and you buy songs or albums through the store. But they have digital rights management that restricts you from using the files in certain ways, like you can't burn the same playlist from iTunes more than 3 times or something. Or use the song on more than a few computers or iPods. Or maybe even just one iPod. I think there are programs that can strip the DRM tho.

well as far as burning goes, it doesn't sound too bad to get around. You just make a new playlist every once in a while. Or do they have something that'll stop that from working?

Not sure, I'm no expert at iTunes store or their songs. I can look it up. I would never burn a CD from iTunes songs anyway. Eeew.

Ok so, are they lossless files? and if not, what codec? and does it make sense to all of you that there won't be a physical release of these tracks? I don't have any experience with iTunes. So in other words, do bands usually put out cds as well as these iTune thingies?

You can authorize 5 different computers to use a song. You can burn a playlist 7 times. You can transfer a song to any iPod as long as its from one of the 5 authorized computers.

I also read this, sounds like total BS:

With the update to iTunes 4.7.1, Apple has quietly introduced a limit to the number of users who can access your iTunes shared music per day, according to several posts on websites and Apple's own support area. The limit applies to the number of unique machines that can access the iTunes library via the built-in sharing feature and is separate from its iTunes music license agreement, which allows playback of purchased songs on five different computers. The sharing limitation prevents more than five different machines from accessing a users' shared playlist, regardless of whether the song is purchased from iTunes (protected by Apple's FairPlay DRM software) or whether it is a standard (unprotected) MP3 file. "This applies merely to the Rendezvous sharing feature of your music library and playlist... even if they are non-protected AAC's or MP3's and/or CD's you've ripped yourself."

iTunes store suuuucks.

They are 128kbit AAC files which are just a version of MP4 codec. There won't be a physical release cause these are all available commercially. I think that article said they are reducing the prices of SP albums in stores tho. Also, nobody would buy 114 songs worth of SP rarities in a real store. Probably. For the 113 album songs you can just buy the albums. Except for Machina 2.

I've burned a TON of CDs from MP3s. The sound quality isn't quite as good as an actual CD, but there's not that much of a difference. If your main concern is hearing the music, then there's nothing wrong with it at all.

Some of those Sony ATRAC3 formats are totally unlistenable, like the one my brother uses with his MD. I listened to Song 2 by Blur and it sounded like Song 0.002. :(

http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/aac/ <--- here's a simple article
http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/techinf/aac/ <--- this one's pretty good, it explains a bit better

there are a slew of articles relating to aac v. mp3 or mpc v. mp3 or ogg vorbis v. mp3; all of which surpass mp3 now.

basically, they've done a lot to improve their algorithm. i guess the most compelling argument to the public would be that aac provides higher quality at lower bitrates. aac at 128kbs sample rate is betterthan mp3s at 160 up to 192 kbps. but it's not even just that, if you read even those articles you'll see there is more than just better quality at lower bitrates. in any case, like i said, i don't want to get into this discussion here cause then we should talk about mpc and ogg vorbis too, heh.
and besides, lossy formats are teh suck!

oh, jeez, people were making sound as if the quality was horrible! yeah, i know mp3s aren't as good as CD quality, i've burned hundreds of CDs too, this will be my first time dealing with this file type and buying songs online so I had no idea what to compare the quality too.

If it's like mp3s then it'll be good enough for me :)

I really can't see this not being released on cd in some form in 6 months or so. Possibly it won't be the whole thing because this box set would be about 7 discs and that would be overkill of songs that we already have. I think this is just the initial way the tracks are being released...marketing scheme.

and NilSineDeo: of course they are listenable! it'll prolly be like listening to mp3s at 192kbps at least.

I don't like the idea of paying for digital music, but I gladly buy CDs. I don't think it's fair to charge $10~12 for an album in digital format, actually, there's no reason to buy this digital music when you can have the real disc with artwork on your hands for a bit more.

My hopes is that the Nirvana box sells well. Indeed, would be a motivation for labels to look after bands from that generation.

First of all, you rank the lightsaber duels as follows:

#1 - Luke vs. Darth Vader in ROTJ
#2 - Anakin vs. Obi-Wan in ROTS
#3 - Luke vs. Darth Vader in ESB
#4 - Windu & Windu's Badass Gangsta Jedi Pose / Yoda vs. Darth Sidious in ROTS
#5 - Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul in TPM
#6 Anakin & Obi-Wan / Yoda vs. Darth Tyranus in ATOC
#7 Anakin & Obi-Wan vs. Darth Tyranus in ROTS
#8 Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader in ANH

Second of all, this release blows.

For anyone cares here's a link to a nice program that will strip the DRM from any protected AAC files you may have bought at the iTunes store. Best of all it does the conversion from .m4p to .m4a without having to burn and re rip so there's no additional loss of quality.

http://www.hymn-project.org/

Now if only there was a magical program to turn AAC's into a lossless file format. Oh well :(

this is not possible to do.

it looks like anakin / obi-wan will beat the shit out of everything. the current ones are like this.

1. Qui-Gonn/Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul (would be even better if not for shit ending)
2. Luke vs. Vader (ESB)
3. Luke vs. Vader (ROTJ)
4. Count Dooku vs. everybody (still pretty cool to see Anakin and Obi get their asses kicked0
5. Obi-Wan vs. Vader

I'm proud to say I have never seen a single Star Wars movie. I consider it quite an accomplishment. It hasn't been easy... people have attempted to force me to watch it after hearing this. But I won't budge. I'm actually one of only two people I know to have never seen one. I hope to make it through life without A) Seeing a Star Wars movie and B) Going to Disneyworld. I've also never seen a Lord of the Rings movie... although it's a little too soon to consider that an accomplishment.

And none of the Machina II b-sides are in-cluded in that list of 114 (besides Slow Dawn & Lucky 13 which are part of Judas). This made me wonder if Machina II will not be in the 113 album tracks. Is there a way to make up 113 album tracks without including M2?

Yer rannkin based on flashy flashness. I put Luke vs. Vader ROTJ at the top cuz "I am a Jedi, like my father before me" is pretty much the whole point of all the movies. And the Anakin/Obi-Wan is pretty much the point of the first 3 ones.

Anyway, shit ending in the TPM duel? C'mon, Maul got lopped in half! That was sweet.

The following are definitely *******d:

Gish (10)
Siamese Dream (13)
Pisces Iscariot (14)
MCIS (28)
Adore (16)
Machina I (15)

That comes to 96, which leaves us with 17.

Machina II (14)
Untitled (3)

As you see, the Untitled b-sides weren't listed in the 114 b-sides, so maybe they're considering the Untitled single in this category?
