I just downloaded this off the hub tonight, and I noticed that Kooks sounds like it was sourced from mp3. The rest of the show sounds fine, so I was wondering if that's just the way it sounds, or if there was some MP3 > WAV > SHN at some point.

Kooks was not on the Black Sessions disc. A MP3 copy is available though, so that's likely the case--HOWEVER, a COMPLETE 06.29.93 was recently released on the hub, and I highly recommend you download that one instead.

uh, are you talking about this? or is it just a coincidence that two 93 shows in a row got released in complete form at the same time...

Actually, it is supposedly NOT sourced from the Black Sessions bootleg. I downloaded it from dead under the title "1993.06.29 - paris, fr (complete)." I see that other people are sharing it as well, but I am alsmost positive that Kooks is indeed mp3 sourced, and I think we should try to avoid spreading mp3 sourced material on the hum.
This is what the text file that came with it says:

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

Taper: ?
Source: FM (ana)
Flaws: Minor static during some songs
SHN: CDR-? > EAC v0.9 beta 3 > MKW Audio Compression Tool

Ask Mike Cranston...he's the one who circulated it. I doubt Mike would let something mp3 sourced on the hub, though.

i put this up because i had a couple requests for it. i gave it a listen before i put it up ... but obviously not a good enough one cause i missed Kooks. maybe we should take it down ...the only is that there are few options available.

hey lauren, thanks for the backup--- but it seems that they are right. i hear a gap after drown ... i feel bad about this .... i should take it down.

i got this from a highly reputable trader (chris something ... i can't remember his last name) and i haven't seen this show on many people's bootlist, let alone a clean version.

i'll do a cooledit check to see if it is indeed Mp3. if it is, then its my fault. ...

Even if that one song is mp3 sourced, the overall quality of the show far exceeds the 96kbps mp3s i downloaded from the SPAA oh so many years ago. . .

Crap I haven't read this post, someone should have mentioned it to me. I've unshared it and I'm going to examine Kooks for myself. I notice there are a number of gaps between songs towards the end but I assumed they were due to commercial cuts or the stupid DJ being cut out. Its true that this Kooks sounds way better than an mp3 I used to have of it, from what I recall. I already burned the show, hope its alright.

I shall now submit my findings:

The recording is put together from two different sources. It switches after Suffer fades out. The good half is not from the Black Sessions boot and is not mp3. It could be from Spaceboy but I didn't bother checking. The bad half could be mp3 but I'm leaning towards it not being mp3 but just a lesser quality recording. In any case, I think its worth keeping if you already have it, but shouldn't be shared on the hub.

By the way, someone mentioned that you can faintly hear what used to be on the tape before this guy taped SP over it. I didn't realize this was possible but its noticeable around Kooks so that may be contributing to the mp3-ish sound. The good half of this recording doesn't sound very ana to me but I don't know. The 2nd half could very well be. Also, the 2nd half has weird gaps between tracks but I wouldn't say they didn't look like the caps that occur between mp3 files, and the final track ends abruptly whereas an mp3 track would have a small fade-out appearance. This could have easily been chopped off, but why would they bother with that and not the gaps that were actually noticeable?
