View Full Version : So, tell me more about these Taiyo Yuden CD's...

I'm kinda confused on this matter which is quickly becoming all the rage. Alright... so these Taiyo Yudens will be regardless of brand, right? From what I get, it's just the manufacturer of the actual media.

What are some indications that they're these discs? Because the package says made in Japan instead of Taiwan? What color is the disc's bottom?

Maybe it's just me, but I think TDK got cheap on us somewhere along the line. I burned like 200 of their discs that I bought about 6 months ago. They had this nice blue tint to the bottom. I grabbed 100 last night at Circuit City (2.99 after rebate per 50) and they've got that weird gold/yellow bottom that you really can't tell where the burn line is. The package says made in Taiwan. Anyways- my 2nd one last night gets eaten by the burner. Looks like quality control went into the crapper somewhere along the line.

Any help/suggested reading? I'm very interested in this topic.

Well there is a program called CDR ID that will tell you the manufacturer of a cdr. I just realized last night that EAC will do the same thing.

I used to buy TDK a long long time ago, they were dark blue. Then they switched to really light blue. I never checked the manufacturers of either of those, I suppose I still could.

Now I buy strictly Fuji (Taiyo Yuden ones)

For what it's worth, I'm using Maxell discs that Feurio! recognizes as Taiyo Yuden discs. I just noticed, however, that the packaging says "Made in Taiwan". Either way, I've never had one of these discs fail on me. Although some of my oldest gold 74 minute maxells are starting to disintegrate. . .

Just to qualify that, the plastic on the disc is not disintegrating, but the foil or whatever it is seems to be deteriorating around the outside edges to the point that EAC cannot extract the last track on one disc.
