At Queens of the Stone Age/Trail of Dead in Philly/Electric Factory...
For starters, its my own stupid fault for being lazy. I usually crotch everything, then mic up in the bathroom...but this time before the show, I ran the mics on my shoulders, and wore a thin button up shirt over it. I figured it would be ok since I never get a 'real' patdown, just touching the sides. This time, I got the full treatment...He asked what they were, I said they were my mics, but the band is open-taping. (i was just guessing?). He then asked why I was hiding them. I told him I wasn't hiding them, thats just where I like to put them. coughbullshitcough. He called someone and they came over and asked me where I plan on putting the mics. I told them right where they are, on me. Then they asked to see the recorder, and I reached down and pulled it out. To avoid trouble I said I'd put the gear in the car if its a problem. They said 'no, don't worry about it, its cool. We just like to know what people have on them.'
Damn...not exactly what I was expecting, I thought I'd have to make a trip back to the car, but both guys were really cool. I was really nervous since this was my first time getting caught, but it was cool after I walked in. But I'm going to be extremely nervous next show...
so I was whacking my peenee, and my parents walked in.
that was my "getting caught" story.

Never caught.
Friday I taper for 4 HOURS daytime, in a outdoor festival. In Italy nobody cares of tapers. That's cool.

Anyone care to share 'getting caught' stories?</font>
I got caught taping by the security guard of Billy Corgan back in January 2000.
It wasn't Earl (he was replaced by this guy), but that huge white guy (not Gooch).
He caught me during the first 30 minutes of the show (it was a small venue in Paris, France), he asked me to give him both the gear and the mics !!!
That's what i did, and he told me to come back after the show to get them back.
At the end of the show, i wen to see him, and here's what happened :
me : hello, i'm really sorry for what happened, can i get my stuff back ?
him : no, i don't have them anymore.
me : what ?? euh, no... really, i need to have them back.
him : i know what you do, you record show and then you sell them !
me : no, i don't, it's the first time i do that.
him : look at me in the eyes, here, take your MD.
me : and my mics please ?
him : i don't have them anymore, they must have got out of my pockets during the show.
me : no, really, PLEASE, give me back my mics, they are not yours.
him : look, i don't have them anymore, so get the fuck out.
me [showing my backstage pass] : you shouldn't talk to me like that, you'll hear from me.
I was thinking about telling Billy about it, but hum.... i didn't want Billy to kick my ass.
Does anyone know who that guy was ?
And what happened to him ?
Next time i'll see Billy, i'll tell him about it.
Damn this guy, i saw him beating up kids who were crowd surfing with his fucking fists !
PS : in October 2000, a friend of mine was taping a show with a DV camera, it also got stolen by a crew of the band !!

Did he then give you the mics back? I am pretty sure QOTSA is cool with taping, I taped them in Toronto the other night. Front row left side, less than 2 ft from 2 guards, I had the backlit on the whole time and they didn't even say a word to me.
Even better was the pat down, once they got to my side pockets he was like "what's that?" I pulled out the pack of batteries and just replied "They're for my recorder" and that was that, I was in http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/smile.gif

There's been alot of talk about QOTSA on datheads recently. It appears they officially do allow taping and are informing venues. This is a recent change for their latest tour.

There's is this guy from the QotSA community who taped a 2001 concert in Netherlands (08.21.01 - Tivoli). He wasn't even worried about stealthing his stuff: the guy wore a red http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/eek.gif hat with a huge microphone attached to it. Even my blind grandma was able to notice the equipment. Josh Homme obviously noticed it and, during the concert, kept looking at him but didn't care about it. He repeated his taping this year in another QotSA session, same equipment, same red hat and everything ran smooth. He said it's very funny to have people at the audience staring at his red hat w/ a microphone attached. Some people just won't figure out what's going on.
I have some bootlegs were you can hear Josh saying things like "Ok you guy who is taping this shit. I just hope you spread this recording instead of fucking selling it".
So it's OK to tape QotSA, as long as the local security is aware of the band's open taping policy.

Yeah, technically I wasn't caught. Hehehe, ran out of the venue? That actually ran through my mind, but security was being cool, hehehe.
Would videotaping be okay? Or that should be done stealth?
I'm trying to get their show on Sunday here videotaped.

If the bands are absolutely totally cool with board access, the 930 Club will grudgingly give it, but you have to sign a form first essentially giving them to right to sue your ass off if it is ever sold without giving them a percentage of the profits (how much is unspecified). This I know from personal experience last March.

whoa. i actually got caught videotaping a show. heh i totally forgot (its true jason). anywho, i went to see the violent femmes and digital underground at ucsd for some free winter concert show. there wasnt any signs saying "no video cameras allowed" so i brought it in with no problems. sat in the bleachers to the left of the stage and started recording some digital underground. once violent femmes came on and started taping, a couple of security guards approached me and told me to turn it off. i had a hole in my backpack so i taped out of there..another security guard approached me. the guy right next to me wanted to help so he held my backpack and continued recording...again, approached by a couple of security guards who asked me to go with them. so i walk backstage during the femmes set and their manager comes to talk to me. he asks me what im doing. i said im doing it for the school newspaper..bullshit bullshit bullshit. he asks me where my pass is...and i tell him that there wasnt a problem when i walked in with my video camera...and so hes like "well, its either you give me your videotape or you get in a whole lotta trouble with the law for yaddiyaddiyaddi" and so i gave him the tape. whatever. thats my story.
and...i also taped rancid and the beastie boys show at sdsu for the hello nasty tour with a vintage tape recorder. sound quality=horrible. but you can tell some parts from the others. ah well. i guess ill stick to being just an audience member and leave the good work to you guys.
