San Diego pop-punk trio Blink-182 have decided to take "an indefinite hiatus," a spokesperson for their label, Geffen, announced today. The desire to focus on their personal lives was cited as the main incentive for the break.
"For over a decade, Blink-182 [have] toured, recorded and promoted non-stop, all while trying to balance relationships with family and friends," the statement continues. This break will allow the band members "to spend some time enjoying the fruits of their labors with loved ones."
Blink-182 -- frontman-guitarist Tom Delonge, bassist Mark Hoppus and drummer Scott Raynor -- formed in 1993, with instant appeal to the skateboarding/surfing set. The band raised their profile in the mid-Nineties through their Warped Tour sets, finally releasing their major-label debut, Enema of the State, in 1999. (At this point, Travis Barker replaced Raynor on drums.) Enema, their fourth LP, went on to sell four million copies, and the band became known for as much for their sound, as for their irreverent sense of humor. The video for 1999's "What's My Age Again" infamously featured the trio running through the Hollywood streets naked, and that same year the band wickedly parodied the Backstreet Boys in the clip for "All the Small Things."
Blink-182's spokesperson added that "there is no set plan for the band to begin working together again."

In other news, the percentage of 14 year old girls writing sad poetry just skyrocketed about 200% today.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have sad poetry to write.

i really have a lot of respect for this type of decision. although i have even more respect for people who are able to balance the two more evenly and indefinitely (take the Tragically Hip as an example).

LOL!
I saw Green Day open for Blink (i know, it should have been the other way around, but there was nothing I could do) and there were nothing there but 15 year old girls wearing homemade t-shirts! I felt like a senior citizen at that concert!

I saw that tour also, in Toronto w/ Brand New opening. Good show, but Green Day definitely should have been the closing act, because they mopped the floor with Blink.

that's weird, i guess this whole pop punk scene is totally dead now as far as male fans are concerned. i wonder what will fill the void.

no way, the self-titled blink 182 was more like warning or nimrod, a band who was trying to mature but had no idea what the hell they were doing and ended up making forgettable awkward hookless songs that go nowhere

I think it's gotten to the point where a band will be unable to replace Blink 182. No one lacks as much talent as these guys, or sounds just as bad. I think these people have created a hole in the music industry, that no matter how much shit you try to throw in, it'll just never fill the gap.

The Tragically Hip? Just take Green Day as an exemple, it's simpler and a better comparaison.
Tom and Mark seemed to be the best of friends... I wonder what went wrong here but at least they stopped after a solid final record, the self-titled album is by far the best work they've done.

you're right. i was just using the Hip as a comparison because they hit closer to home for me, literally. i see sinclair and baker around Kingston lots - even playing road hockey with their kids.
plus they've got more longevity thus far.

One of the two main gues, (Mark or Tom, not sure) apparently called in TRL today and reinforced the "taking a break" thing. That's bullshite, if yer broken up cuz you're a greedy motherfucker, open up to it.
A new Boxcar album would be the same thing as a new Blink album, cuz the Boxcar album was very similar to the new Blink album anyway.
I think the only real shame out of all this is Travis Barker not drumming again, that dude is seriously good.
