you don't really have many choices if you want a current model dat that is easily stealthable.

just go with an m1.
you need a sound card with a digital input.
you can use DDS tapes that are 60 or 90 meters. they're cheap.

mics are totally personal preference.

yeah m1 is the best choice. tapewise you might want to do some research on dat heads. i've never had trouble w/ audio-grade tapes. i've been told by ppl to watch out for 90m dds tapes. but i dunno.
mic-wise it's up to you. if you can make great tapes w/ the md. then you should be able to make great tapes w/ the dat using the same mic.

If you are interested in buying an M1, I have been looking to sell mine for a while.

I can tell you about it here. I bought it used so I am not sure about the head hours but I used it sparingly in a smoke free environment (home studio). It is cosmetically in good shape. I have the leather case and ac adapter, as well as an optical (digital) 7 pin cable and oade battery box that I wouldn't need. I could test it all out if anybody is really interested in buying the gear. I paid $600, would be willing to sell it for less.

Rubbersoul, I'm interested in making an offer on this, but not in a public forum. Can you check your Private Messages or email me, please?
Thanks,
Tim
