one where you have to go? Once i got called for jury duty but the case never made it to the point where they needed jurors. Apparantly that happens a lot.

my mom got it too and she said she "didn't like their kind" about black people and they let her go. she's the least racist person i know, she just really didn't want to go and knew that would get her out of it.

i could never get jury duty here because i am a student of criminology and know more about the law than a 'regular' person would.

i seriously must get called at least once a year, if not every 6 months for jury duty. i always say that i'm a student and i can't miss class, and get out of it every time... but then its like, as soon as summer comes, i get called right away again. grrrr. i've never had to go though, i always get out of it.

because if you get the letter that doesn't mean you automatically go... (here) they take names off the voter's list... they don't take you off the voter's list if you are ineligable... you still go and then tell them why

Yeah, they don't pay you for like...the first 10 days...and then all you get is like, 50 bucks a day or something...which totally sucks if you have to pay for all your gas/parking for the first 10 days and on. totally not worth it.

did i already post about this?

my dad was on a jury where a guy got viagra from some doctors and died while having sex with his estranged wife. his delinquent sons and daughter sued the doctors. the court found in favor of the doctors.

I'd have a hard time finding people guilty of crimes I don't think should exist as such. Like if it were a drug case, I'd have a hard time putting in a guilty verdict even if it were apparent the person had done what they were accused of.

Yeah, this happens a lot.. That, and during the voir dire, you'll probably be excused anyway. Anyway, odds are, there are 12 other people there that they'd want more, for whatever reasons.

I've never been called for jury duty, but I'm a student anyway, so it doesn't really matter

I was called for jury duty once, but I couldn't get out of it even though I WAS a student. New rule I guess. Anyway, I was too far down on the list so it didn't matter anyway. I just thought it sucked that I could've missed a ton of school and no one care.

I got called for jury duty a week after I became a citizen. Lucky me. Anyway, I went as this snotty 19 year old who didn't think he would get picked to serve as a juror. When they started to ask us questions, I heard all these people before me give the most stupid answers in order to avoid serving on a jury. I answered truthfully and got picked. It turned out to be a malpractice case and lasted 2 weeks or so. I won't go into much detail. When it came down to deliberations, one lady didn't want to vote not guilty because she thought the family should get something out of their daughters death. We convinced her after about 2 hrs and voted not guilty. The only thing that made me sick was all the doctors shaking hands and cheering while the family just sat there sad. Yes, they had just tried to sue them for about 10 million dollars, but they still could have showed a little sympathy.

That's how they do it in the U.S. too. However, when you change your voter registration, you are supposed to be removed as a voter from your previous location (to prevent you from voting in more than one place and all)...but, they almost never actually do that. So, I keep getting letters about jury duty (the post office is so good about forwarding and forwarding and forwarding those) for states I no longer live in.

Sometimes people on the other side will want someone like that for their side. Someone I know of did the same thing and was selected based on that.

I heard they don't do this anymore because people weren't registering to vote for that reason.

I know a few people who weren't registered and who were called.

It is quite possible it varies by state. However, in several states, you are automatically registered to vote when you renew your driver's license. And even without that automatic registration, there are a shitload of people wandering around out there who are registered to vote but think they are not.

Additionally, for me, voter reg is the only way they got my info...as I never held a state i.d. or driver's license for any of those states where I got called to jury duty.

How did my name get on the jury duty list?
Your name was selected at random from information compiled by the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Elections Department.
