I figure since it's the beginning of December, we can give everybody a month or so to do their lists. Here's the low-down:

1. Please vote for the top 20 singles of the year. The scoring is as follows, and yes, I stole this idea from PFMS, eat me:

#1=25 points
#2=20 points
#3=18 points
#4=17 points
#5=16 points

And so on. This is designed to give more credit to the ones and (to a lesser extent) the twos on everybody's list so that the one or two songs you prefer over all the others really get a push.

2. Please give me 20 songs, ranked in order from 1-20. No more, no less; it just makes grading these easier, and I'm busy.

3. Please list 2002 singles only. However, all singles are open--indie singles as well as mainstream singles.

4. The idea of what constitutes a single from 2002 should be pretty obvious, but let's try to keep it reasonable while maintaining inclusivity:

If singles were released either commercially or to radio in only one country this year (UK/US/Australia/what have you), they count. (Example: Kylie Minogue's "In Your Eyes," a UK-only single.)
If they were released in another country last year but gained widespread North American distribution this year, they count, because Americans/Canadians still comprise the majority of these boards. (Example: Super Furry Animals' "It's Not the End of the World?")
If a song had a video in rotation this year, even if it didn't get released to radio or commercially, it counts. (Example: Wilco's "Jesus, etc." or Tom Waits' "God's Away on Business.")
EPs only count as singles if they were meant to promote the first track. (Example: Interpol's "PDA" counts, but Prefuse 73's "92 v. 02" doesn't.)
Finally, singles re-released from 2001 records count. (Example: Trail of Dead's "Relative Ways," which originally was a 2001 EP but turned into a 2002 single and video.)

5. If you don't know what was a single and what wasn't from some of your favorite albums this year, look on AMG. If you still have questions, then ask me in this thread. I'd be happy to find out for you. Also, don't forget about non-album singles.

6. Deadline: January 1. The best album poll has the same deadline.

7. If you want to post tentative lists in this thread, feel free, but PLEASE PM me your lists when they are official. If you want to post official lists in here, too, that's fine, but I very well might miss it if you just post it in here, and it's not a big deal to cut and paste it into a PM.

8. I'm going to tabulate as I get lists, so once you PM me your list, you can't change it. So, please don't send unless you're sure that your list is going to be final.

9. If you're interested in writing up a little blurb about songs that you really like that wind up making the final list, let me know.

10. Please send me lists! It's not too difficult, it's entertaining, and it'll be interesting to see what you people think is good.

is anyone besides us 3 into this PFMS shit though?

i'm not sure if you want to count "Fins to Make Us More Fish-Like" really, but it is the title-track and first song to a 3 song EP. it doesn't matter too much i think since no one else will vote for it.

and i decided to leave it alone. i like "Another Morning Stoner" better as a single than "Relative Ways" anyhow.

01 Cornelius - "Drop"
02 Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out of My Head"
03 ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - "Another Morning Stoner"
04 The White Stripes - "Fell in Love with a Girl"
05 Blackalicious - "It's Going Down"
06 The Strokes - "Hard to Explain"
07 Clinic - "Walking with Thee"
08 Flaming Lips - "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1"
09 Mum - "Green Grass of Tunnel"
10 Max Tundra - "Lysine"
11 Notwist - "Pick Up the Phone"
12 Ugly Casanova - "Things I Don't Remember"
13 El-P - "Lazerface's Warning"
14 Capitol K - "Pillow"
15 Queens of the Stone Age - "No One Knows"
16 Missy Elliot - "Work It"
17 Interpol - "Obstacle 1"
18 The White Stripes - "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"
19 Flaming Lips - "Do You Realize?"
20 Notwist - "Pilot"

edit.

the only songs on all 3 lists are "Work It" and "Pillow"

heh.

also, i don't think "Lose Yourself" is very good. just myself. i got sick of it after hearing it about 5 times. i think "White America" is the best single Eminem put out this year.

i think it was released in April/May domestically.

i first heard it on the radio when i was in Chicago for the Q101 festival in May.

this is frustrating. Allmusic doesn't always list singles. For instance, I have Low's Canada single and Allmusic doesn't even list it. It also doesn't list "Jesus Etc."(Wilco) or "Gods Away on Business"(Tom Waits).

Why don't we just list our top songs from 2002? it's so much easier! Besides the singles are rarely the best songs anyway.

Irrelevant

because top songs is too inclusive. you're hardly going to have two people voting for the same thing on a board this size.

singles is more fun in my opinion. it's tougher.

I really don't care, so yeah, you can have Hard to Explain.

And sgeek: AMG doesn't list "Jesus etc." or "God's Away on Business" because they weren't official singles; Wilco and Tom Waits just made videos for them that got some airplay (mostly on 120 Minutes, I'd imagine). And yeah, "Canada" is definitely a single, and you should vote for it if you want. If I had posted my (long) honorable mentions list, you'd have seen it.

Some of these may be illegal, I think.
