View Full Version : Whats the best way to store Records?
seign 08-13-2002, 04:15 PM I'm starting a vinyl collection and I'm trying to get a decent case to hold my records in but I don't know which one to buy. Maybe someone with more experience can help me out. I was checking out some DJ cases (the aluminum ones) and they look alright (a little expensive at about $70 a piece). Any other suggestions or links to websites?
Also, whats the ideal condition to store your vinyls? I'm talking about room temperature, air moisture etc.
RumoredToTheS&N 08-13-2002, 04:54 PM i store mine upright in a sturdy box that i keep in my closet. dark & cool so they don't warp. very hi-tech.
King of Devious 08-13-2002, 06:20 PM i just use some orange record holder
The only thing you need to know is to store them upright
DO NOT lay them down flat and stack them

Now thats something that I never heard before. Is that to protect the record from ring wear?
seign 08-13-2002, 08:46 PM I just checked my ebay account and apparently my first record for my collection will be a pink tristessa vinyl http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/smile.gif Well, that and I also ordered a 1979 7" for $3 the other day.
Brandont_h 08-13-2002, 08:48 PM Laying them atop one another will eventually cause the grooves to compress due to the weight and force of gravity. My records all just sit upright beneath my television. Not too hot, not too cold. They are all in a paper sleeve, then cardboard (had to buy replacement paper sleeves for the really old ones) and then finally in plastic sleeves. They sit there happily until such time as I play one. I think those DJ cases are primarily for transportation purposes.
-Brandon [Not very high tech either, but I've never had a problem.]

some people remove the vinyl from the gatefold, and place them in new inner and outer sleeves.
i noticed on my siamese dream lp that if the records are set to far down (toward the fold) it can ruin the gatefold and doesn't shut easily.
if you have a siamese dream box set especially; take the vinyl out of the picture sleeves!!! i've seen several picture sleeves damaged from the vinyl poking through the bottom.

Here's one site with a nice collection (a little bit cheaper than some of the others I've seen also):

Thats probably the best way to go about keeping your album covers from getting messed up. Pretty clever. Now I guess I'll have to find a place that sells blank sleeves.
