i assume so- but Thorpe wasent fantastic in his race today - he won gold but by a slight margin over the guy from the US.
People are talking about Phelps getting a record 7 golds this year in his swimming events. And he's only 19.

I love the Olymipcs- i watched the 100km bike race today - it was a great finish battle between Italy and Portugal (?) for the gold and silver.

I don't know if they showed the whole story behing Ian Thorpe on the U.S channel, but after he won the gold and almost started to cry...man it got to me.

Phelps and Thorpe will be competing against eachother sometime time soon. I think Phelps is going to win though, he had a HUGE lead.

It was just two guys coasting along for about .95 kilometer, not wanting to take the chance of leading, then one of them sprinted and won.

Iíve been watching so many random events.
Mens 10m platforms synchronised diving.
Womenís football, and mens.
Um, swimming, a lot of swimming.
10 m air gun finals. Haha.
Womens like, 48kg weight lifting. Impressive.
Some boxing. A middleweight qualifier I think. Our South African guy almost fucked up that number 2 guy, but lost his stamina.

Some American commentator was making such a fucking idiot of himself, talking about South Africa and Soweto, trying to sound like he knew was he was going on about, when he really didnít, at all. I was laughing quite a bit at him.

Iím enjoying the Olympics a lot.

It's ok, we got out first one today. The athletes here aren't really supported compared to other countries. The mentality here is 'just go to do your best' whereas other countries it's 'if you don't win a medal, off with your head on your return'.

I think if the government assured an easy living life for olympic athletes, more people would want to get involved and the obesity rate would go down.

Who would want to work as a waitress 13 hours and then go train? :/

Anyway, I hope the government changes their supporting of the athletes before the olympic games come here in 2010 and save ourselves from some embarassment...

Security tightened after Canadian fan leaps into Olympic pool

Last Updated: Tue Aug 17 16:47:07 EDT 2004

CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Olympics organizers have increased security at all sports venues after a Canadian spectator plunged into a swimming pool during a diving competition in what appeared to be a publicity stunt for an online casino.

The man, who sported a blue tutu, had the the name of a gaming Website plastered on his bared chest when he scampered onto the pool deck and climbed to an adjoining diving board during the men's synchronized three-metre springboard event on Monday.

He jumped into the pool after about a minute atop his perch and was immediately apprehended by security officials at the Olympic Aquatic Centre.

The man was identified as Ron Bensimhon of Montreal, by GoldenPalace.com. The Website admitted that it had used Bensimhon for publicity stunts in the past, but Website spokesman Drew Black said the Canadian was acting on his own on Monday

"The guy's done it for us before, but . . . he really did this unexpected," Black said.

"He claims he did it for notoriety, to get famous. So that's what he did and that's why he put on GP (GoldenPalace.com) because GP has done all this stuff before. And that's about all we got from (Bensimhon's) lawyer."

The 31-year-old was arrested on charges of "interrupting the Games," said a Greek Ministry of Public Order spokesman.

Bensimhon stayed in a police station overnight and has a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

It was not yet known what penalties or fines the Canadian might face.

Although the spectator appeared to have harmless intentions, Olympic officials took the breach seriously.

Organizers have spent an unprecedented amount on Olympic security and the incident exposed a hole in the supposed impenetrable safety ring at venues.

"We are going to put security guys around the field of play," Marton Simitsek, an Athens 2004 executive, told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Olympic organizers had said the man was trying to send a love message to his wife by getting on TV, but the message painted on his chest promoting the Web site suggested otherwise.

The fan's disruption turned the competition on its head.

The top-ranked Chinese duo Kenan Wang and Bo Peng appeared headed toward certain victory before the intrusion. However, after the incident, one of the Chinese divers landed on his back on his final dive and the team received zeros across the board.

Russian Dmitry Sautin then knocked himself on the board and American brothers Justin and Tony Dumais worked themselves out of a medal position with a missed landing.

Unheralded Greeks Nikolaos Siranidis and Thomas Bimis won the gold. It was the host country's first gold of the Games.

That was a great swim.

Both our South Africans started great.

It was so fucking close. 0.06 seconds between gold and silver, and damn Thorpe came up to take Bronze. Getting Silver and Bronze would have been cool.

Then again, so would gold.

How close.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Russia's Irina Korzhanenko was stripped of her shot put gold medal Monday, the first athlete of the Athens Games to lose an Olympic title because of doping.

Korzhanenko, the first woman to win a gold medal at the sacred site of Ancient Olympia, tested positive for the steroid stanozolol after Wednesday's competition. The backup B sample confirmed the initial finding.

The International Olympic Committee executive board expelled Korzhanenko from the games and ordered the Russian Olympic Committee to return the medal.

The gold goes to Cuba's Yumileidi Cumba Jay. Germany's Nadine Kleinert would move up to silver, and Russia's Svetlana Krivelyova to bronze.

Korzhanenko, who served a previous two-year drug suspension, faces a lifetime ban from the sport. In 1999, she was stripped of the silver medal at the world indoor championships for a doping violation and was given a two-year suspension that kept her out of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Under international rules, two steroid violations warrants a lifetime ban.

The IOC decision came a day after Greek weightlifter Leonidas Sampanis became the first athlete of the Athens Games to be stripped of a medal for a doping offense. Sampanis lost his bronze medal in the 62-kg category after testing positive for testosterone.

The shot put was held at Ancient Olympia, about 200 miles southwest of Athens, two days before the start of track and field in Olympic Stadium. It was the first time women have competed at the site; the ancient Olympics were for men only.

Korzhanenko won with a throw of 21.06 meters -- the first throw more than 21 meters in four years.

Another female shot putter, Uzbekistan's Olga Shchukina, tested positive in a pre-event screening for the steroid clenbuterol. She finished 19th and last in her qualifying group and was expelled from the games Friday.

So far, nine weightlifters have failed drug tests. A Kenyan boxer was also sent home for using drugs. With six days left in the games, including track and field events, more positives were likely.

"The testing is more extensive and more comprehensive, so you'd expect we would catch more athletes that are cheating," Dick Pound, the World Anti-Doping Agency chief, told The Associated Press Sunday. "It increases the confidence in the authenticity of the competition if we are taking people out who cheated."

Just a note, Lithuania nearly beat the U.S. four years ago but they bricked the final shot. Incedentally, the dude that took that shot was Clutch with a capital C against the U.S. this year.

Eh, theyíre doing just fine. IĎm sure when the countries economy improves and we can afford better training and such weíll send a team out there, since The Olympics is largely a reflection of the Economic Status of the countries involved.

America hasnít accepted yet that the rest of the world has caught up, talent wise, or they would not have lost to teams like Puerto Rico and Lithuania. They beat Angola. Who are ranked 12/12. Every time they scored they jumped around like little rabbits on ecstasy.

Put a amateur team together in the U.S., let them play with international rules (which are vastly different than U.S. rules) and play together for more than two weeks they kick everyone's ass by at least 20 points again.

Oh, the NBA isn't a great league. I wish they played by international rules, but the American game is so far ahead of most other countries. If you had a real team practice and play with actual position players, I think they'd rack shop like they did for so long.

American basketball won when the sport wasn't huge in the U.S. Now that it's massive, the game has evolved so far from those years it's insane.

The other leagues are of course good, but only Italy and Spain are actually developed enough to test the American leagues.

Well, obviously the NBA is the premier leauge in the NBA. However, this team is not the best in the world. Obviously if we had Shaq, Kobe, T-Mac, Ray Allen, Ben Wallace et al, we would simply dominate the international game. Of course, we don't and it really shows how much the rest of the world has caught up. We could have sent a college all-star team to the 92 Olympics and beat up on people. That's just not the case anymore. Consider how much can happen in the next four years, as well.

The rules differences aren't that big, actually. What, the lane is bigger? The three point line is shorter? Come on it's minor at best. NHL players don't have problems with international rules. That's a horrible excuse. If you actually knew anything about basketball you would know that it's the lack of outside shooting that really kills the US team. When LeBron, Iverson, Wade and Richard Jefferson are your three point shooters you're in big fucking trouble.

I think we agree on principle, just have different viewpoints. This team only has one top 10 player on it. The rest of those guys are young, aren't "great" and don't play well together.

But the rules differences I'm talking about are around the ref's. They actually call walks, handchecks, double dribbles, etc. That gets the players out of rhythm.

South Africa were disappointing in their only previous World Cup finals appearance, failing to get past the opening round at France '98 despite only one defeat in their three group matches.

But there can be little doubt South Africa's team have developed significantly.

Less than 10 years ago, the country was still isolated from international sport as a result of the apartheid policies enforced by the government.

South Africa had been a founder member of African football but were suspended by FIFA in 1964 and expelled 10 years later.

They had not played a World Cup game before 1992 and got a 4-0 thumping from Nigeria in their debut outing.

Motherfuck. That was so horrible I could throw up. Imagine how she must feel. I knew just before the race started that she was gonna fall though; I had a flashback to Jeremy Witherspoon in Salt Lake City and remembered that there was no way Canada was actually gonna win a medal in this.

That's cool about the diving though. And that lady (and I use the term loosely) who won the cycling gold.

:)

yeah, Wootherspoon was the first thing I thought of too when I saw her go down like that.

Except for that gold in cycling, it's been a pretty shitty 24 hours in canadian international sports. Well, and the silver in diving i guess.

thats exactly what i was thinking as well - I said- right before she ran , "Canada's gonna choke. We always choke at somthing. She'll fall just like Wotherspoon did in Salt Lake" .I felt so bad for her when i went down to the newstand and all the papers had pictures of her on the front , in complete anguish on all the front covers.

yeah, it's good, though Despatie (or however you spell it) was in first for a while before dropping down, and he's ranked number one in the world in that event, even though his real strength is the 10M springboard.

I was more refering to the baseball team blowing an 8th inning lead, then coming within 2 feet of tying the game in the 9th inning, as well as Team Canada losing 3-1 to the US in a world cup exhibition game.... and then the whole Feliticien thing.
