when i was in high school i bought 'the biography of reinhold messner' or whatever that was. it was a fairly solid album with a few memorable tracks. it never converted me into a fan though

This is the only acceptable answer, really. But the follow-up is nice, too.

I agree with those who said the self-titled album is best. The others are good too, though.

by far his/their weakest album (well, i've never heard fear of pop. but excluding that.) s/t and whatever and ever amen are both pretty solid albums.

i liked rockin the suburbs a lot too, though it substantially differs from bf5. some songs from that worth listening to: annie waits, fired, rockin the suburbs, fred jones part 2, the luckiest. the first three are more upbeat, the latter two are probably the ones "with heart" you may be looking for.

also, the bf5 sessions at west 54th is worth checking out if you can find it.

I only have Whatever and Ever Amen, but it's one of my favorite albums that I have.

I like his Solo stuff more then the BF5 stuff. 'the biography of reinhold messner' is about the only thing he has ever put out that I would tell you to avoid, not bad but far from being up to the level set by his other work.

get the "ben folds live" album. the bonus dvd has some live footage that my company shot for him. also my buddy was standing right next to ben folds when the cover shot was taken. (although hes not in the picture)

Another vote for self-titled debut. Naked Baby Pictures has a few gems and some good live tracks. It's worth it just for Eddie Walker.

The first album I got into was Whatever and Ever, but I listened to the self titled album today, and Jackson Cannery does not fail to amaze me. The Sessions at West 54th DVD is fucking amazing.

oh, I wish they'd just come back.

He is fucking annoying live, and it could very well be that he should stop making music now, but that doesn't change the fact that Ben Folds Five was awesome. I haven't listened to them in ages, though, due to the kind of performances you're talking about.

Yeah, the last time I saw him live he was sort of annoying. I saw the Five three times and every time I see him I just wish they'd reform :(

I like Whatever and Ever Amen considerably more than the self-titled, though neither are bad.

I'd pick up one of those before getting the later ones.

Wow, I like Rienhold Messner.
:erm

It was given to me as a gift and I never listened to any of the others. Guess I should.

I like it too. I never really understood why it's not very appreciated by many people.
