You or your husband should learn how to change the oil by yourselves.

Not everyone has the desire or the time.

It's like $15 to get an oil change at WalMart. No big deal. I'd rather do that then waste a bunch of time figuring it out and getting dirty.

i know how to do it, but never have the time, plus they check all your other fluids, put air in your tires, etc...

When I finally buy a car one day, I'm going to learn how to repair it.

But really, I'll just find a mechanic who won't dry anally rape me.

Whoever says that they don't have the time should get off netphoria.

To do it yourself, once you know how, takes only about 20-30 minutes. The most time consuming part is letting the oil drain (or in my case, unscrewing the bolt because I'm weak).

You don't get that dirty. It's not like you're going to get oil all over yourself. If you know what you're doing (and that comes with practice), you can do it in your work clothes and come out fine.

$15 *is* a good deal...but you can do it yourself for about $10 and save yourself the hassle of having to deal with those fucking morons at the auto place.

Since I'm lucky enough to have my step dad teach me all this shit, I'm learning how to work on my car myself. And I'm saving ASSLOADS of fucking money, too.

We worked on a head gasket job that would've cost me a LOT of money (not to mention my car had to be almost completely taken apart) but instead we bought parts from the junk yard and did it ourselves for a few hundred bucks.

I mean, to each his own...some people just don't care to learn it. That's fine, but don't complain that other people do a bad job when you can do it yourself.

Plus, I don't know how many times I've felt proud to walk into a Murrays (auto parts store) and actually KNOW what I'm talking about. :)

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUR It's pretty common knowledge that you should change your oil at minimum every 6000 miles.

As the Canadian said, your husband should change the oil. It's always been my boyfriendly duty. That and the saturday car washes.

It's worth the small amount of money to get it serviced than messing with it yourself.

For real. 30 bucks a couple times a year is definitely manageable.

i hate changing the oil on my new car. if i put it up on ramps and remove the drain plug, the oil tends to not go out in a single stream, so it gets all over me and the bottom of the car. it's quite annoying. the oil filter is also in a place that's a huge pain in the ass to get to.

i guess it's not annoying enough to justify paying someone else to do it, though.

you obviously don't drive much.
if i only changed it twice a year i'd probably pay that. i tend to drive 30-50,000 miles per year. i couldn't get by with just two.

It's a very straightforward procedure. It's never taken me more than 25 minutes. It's also nice to check on other things yourself. Brake fluid, pad thickness, coolant levels. ATF/MTF.

Haha. I have driven once (in a parking lot) and I was very drunk. I think it scared everyone I was with to death.

i agree completely. i was told to change the oil every 6000 miles. my car is at 5800. the guy at the place said i should be in every 3000.

Yeah that's what they tell me too. Bastards.
They also tell me I need a new air filter every time I go in there, even when I replaced it fairly recently.

yeah. ill keep doing it at every 6000.

and ill probably keep paying them the 30 bucks to do it. eric works hard. i'd rather he get to relax on his weekend then change the oil in my car. but thats just me :)

My dad changes his oil every 3,000 miles. I've always heard that's the way to do it. He also changes his windshield-wiper fluids and all that stuff then.

I air my bike tire up when it goes flat.

Don't let them sell you anything other than an oil change though. The air filters are about 1/3rd at any auto parts store. And they are extremely simple to install. Just remove the top of your airbox, pull the old filter out, and put the new one in. You're good to go.

oh i dont, eric will usually put in small things like that that need to be replaced - a filter or a belt or whatever. but the oil changes are so cheap anyway, i just prefer to pay someone. eric's fixing the other right now actually. its got a flat.

im very easy on my car, i dont drive it on a daily basis. usually 2 or 3 times a week for grocery shopping and an evening on the town. so really, every 3000 miles seems excessive to me.

i like to travel and i don't like to fly. i like to go to shows and there aren't shows around here that often, so i always have to drive at least 2 hours. this year is going to be an inflated number because i took a cross-country trip that ended up being 8000 miles.

also, i discovered this site a while back
http://www.mob-rule.com/counties
and i'm seeing what kind of percentage/stats i can rack up.

i don't like to be stuck around here. i want to be out and on the move as much as i can be. it's more fun that way.

Huh.
I drive up to San Francisco once every 6 weeks or so, and that's 640 miles round trip...and I thought that was an obscene amount of driving.
I would be stoked if I never had to drive again.

I don't feel like going back to quote...but "messing with it yourself" is bad. Learning how to mess with it yourself and accomplish something is good. Becoming familiar with the one thing that keeps you safe from the middle of nowhere just seems to me like a good idea. So that when there's no one around to pay to do a job for you, you can mess with it yourself.
