So who puts the bug in candidates' ears about seeming what they are not? John Kerry last week professed to be a big fan of "Manny Ortez," then re-emphasized the phoofery by correcting it to "David Ortez." No, that was Dave (Baby) Cortez and "The Happy Organ." A few years back Kerry went on a Boston station with Eddie Andelman and said "my favorite Red Sox player of all time is The Walking Man, Eddie Yost," who never played for the Red Sox. Kerry is going to sweep New England. He's going to get 70 percent of the vote in Massachusetts. He doesn't have to be a Red Sox fan, all he has to do is not be John Ashcroft.

kerry is stupid for trying to act like he knows what he's talking about in things unrelated to his real interests. politicians should realize it's okay to NOT know some things, especially in entertainment and such. the everyman thing is hokey for most of the big guns on the hill. bill clinton is the only "everyguy" because he did have a childhood minus fancy prep schools and above average income parents.
but that kerry and bush are millionaires, i couldn't care less. i don't think making 40,ooo or 40,ooo,ooo matters as long as you pay attention to the needs of the everyman and don't ignore them pursuing hatred for the elite or ignoring the everyman for your elitist inner circle.

Wait, you're getting on Kerry's case for not knowing about baseball when:
1. Bush is just as patrician, coming from a rich N.E. family, and
2. He, unlike K, actually ran a baseball team into the ground?

I simply fins it hillarious and perfectly in character for him to claim he knows all about it when he demonstrates he doesn't even know the name of one player on his "favorite team."
Maybe more of those "world leaders" he also speaks with constantly will give him some pointers.

Ummm if I had to pick a favorite baseball team I'd say the Cubs. I know they have Sosa....and Alou. Only because I hear people scream their names during games through my window. I have no clue of players names besides the most famous. Hell, I even watch games from time to time too.

But you don't run for office and then to shed your silver spoon image and say that you're a huge Cubs fan and that you love Stevie Sasa.

I hate this board. I wish it was deleted. I make a good solid thread about affirmative action hoping to spur some actual debate in here and all we continue to get is pedantic namecalling.
e.g.:
"JOHN KERRY IS A DOUCHE!"
"YEAH WELL HE'S NOT G.W.!"
"OH YEAH WELL YOUR MOM GIVES BAD HEAD."
"NOT AS BAD AS BUSH!"
The people who wanted this board complained about the idiots on the Gen Chat board. You nitwits aren't much better.

On a more serious note, what did you think--that partisan politics and mudslinging weren't going to enter into a board dedicated to the most heated election in recent memory?
That aff. action thread really did get derailed, though. You have a point.

There are no issues in this election.
If there were, someone would bring up the fact the stock market is crumbling (oops, didn't see that one coming), unemployment is up again, Bush promised six million new jobs and is in a one million job hole.
Oh, and that whole thing about health care which is much more fucking important than how we're going to help Pakistan relate to Israel.
But, Bush has forgotten he's running the U.S., not the middle east war game. Hopefully Kerry kicks off his domestic agenda and beats Bush's ass at the Convention next week.

I agree with you. But think of it this way: Based on the issues, people don't like GWB--thus the mudslinging. It's juvenile, but occasionally one just gets so riled up that one says stupid things. Like in the middle of any fight, really, except this one's a lot more important (and dorkier). It's not something to be proud of, but I'd argue that it is inevitable, and perhaps uncontrollable, in an election year such as this one.
At the same time, I won't deny that a lot of the GWB hate is most likely based in groupthink as opposed to serious thought. And of course, as you say, there is a very serious need to return to issues. I'm sure you read my anti-Nader diatribes; I'm the last person you know who would say this election is not based on issues. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just feeding off the dogma of radicals.

No, the only issue they debate is Iraq - and it's not even being debated, just "You don't know what you're doing" by both candidates.
The other things are thrown around, but Bush refuses to even project how he plans to help domestic problems - because, again, he's too concerned with running the Middle East than the United States or Britian, which any upstanding president loves to run. :)

Yeah, but this isn't a "usual" election. There was little bounce after either convention last year since the two parties are so divided.
