And I mean, actually scary. I really want to watch a scary movie for some reason.

Does anyone remember Event Horizon?? Was it scary, or did I just think it was scary because I was like nine years old?

event horizon was pretty scary. but yeah it probably wouldn't be now that i'm older either. the ring was really the last movie that actually had my heart racing. but the last house on the left is a classic and should be viewed by everyone.

No, man.

I mean. scary. Not like 'oh, ha, that's neat.'

I want to not be able to sleep tonight because a movie scared the living shit out of me. That's what I want.

Sometimes when it's late and my house is all dark I get the feeling like my TV is gonna turn on all of the sudden and then I freak out and run upstairs.

BUT STILL. not scary enough!

WATCH IT!!!!

Date: 29 July 2003
Summary: This Is About As Low As You Can Go.

Two innocent if somewhat senseless teenage girls (Sandra Cassell and Lucy Grantham) are abducted, humiliated, and murdered (one is also raped) by a phenomenally disgusting quartet of criminals (David A. Hess, Jeramie Rain, Fred Lincoln, and Marc Sheffler). These creeps end up at the house of the parents of one of the girls ... and the parents administer brutal revenge.

The debut picture for original "Friday the 13th" director Sean S. Cunningham and "Nightmare on Elm Street" creator Wes Craven (yes, they actually made a film together) is just one big assortment of flaws: it's stupid, laughable, revolting junk that is compounded by the budding film-makers' lack of experience. The comedy relief is lame and the characters are repellent in the extreme. Bad dialogue, too.

Only noteworthy for trivia value: - David A. Hess, who plays gang leader Krug, also did the (dumb) music. - Ada Washington, who plays the chicken truck driver, was in real life the maid or nanny (I can't remember exactly, but I read it in 'Fangoria' once) for Craven and his family. - Future film director Steve Miner ("Friday the 13th" parts 2 and 3, "Halloween: H20", "Lake Placid") was an assistant producer. - That's Craven's son Jonathan as the boy whose balloon is popped. - Co-star Jeramie Rain was married to Richard Dreyfuss for about ten years and they had three children together.

Good thing Craven went on to make better films and that "The Last House on the Left" wasn't indicative of his future output (even Craven himself has admitted that he went too far with this film).

I can't in good conscience give this more than two out of ten (and I only rate it that high because I liked and sympathized with the victims - although it's too tragic that they couldn't have fought back and / or tried to escape sooner).

:erm

sorry, but for me those did that. all other movies, such as event horizon, were just "neat" to me.

Whoa, what? I guess I'm the only person who was completely scared shitless by The Ring. The following evening after watching that movie, I was watching television when the reception started getting strangely wonky and I seriously froze in fear. And then the next day the phone rang and my mom yelled at me to answer it 'cause she was washing dishes or something. I picked it up, muttered a meager "Hello?" and waited for what seemed like ages for a response. I almost started crying because I thought the next thing I would hear would be a breathy "SevEn DAYS!!1" but instead I heard a confused "Hellow?!" from my dad!!! It turned out he didn't say anything right away because he didn't hear my squeaky hello.

Event Horizon was a great movie! One of my favorites in high school...

Ravenous is also a good movie. It's about cannibalism Donner Party style and has a REALLY good soundtrack. No songs or anything, just creepy instrumental music. I watched this movie for the first time, back to back, with the remake of House on Haunted Hill and I wasn't able to fall asleep that night until the sun came up :o

hah.

I dunno, I thought it was pretty good. Like I said, if it's late and I'm by myself, and I start thinking about it, I get a little uneasy.

But I want to lie awake at night fucking sobbing because I'm so scared. or something. :erm

The old TCM didn't scare me, although they are fun to watch. The remake scared me more than the old ones did. Although I love in the beginning of the second one when they're at the radio station pounding that guy's head in with a hammer, and yelling "INCOMING MAIL!"

haha, that guy got hella owned.

I do that everynight. No, not because of horror flicks. But because I am a lost, lonely little boy.

Well, I've pretty much seen the entire movie. It's just, I don't remember the whole 'come play with us' scene. So I figure I must have missed some of it.

But I've seen most of it. I liked it.

The Ring is the only movie that wasn't gory that still managed to make me almost piss myself. But um, come to think of it, that's the only really scary movie I've seen, cuz i prefer to watch movies that are supposed to be scary, and are hilarious in their failure. goddamit, i'm so uncool.

i definitely recommend Ringu [the Japanese version] tho.

All that is is a crappy, less cool-looking version of The Ring.

I thought The Ring was just a dumbed down version of Ringu, with more special effects to appease american audiences with short attention spans.

in the mouth of madness - eerie and creepy yet cool
the gate - scary and funny
clownhouse - scary if you're afraid of clowns, be weary of the pedo porn scene though

I don't see anything wrong with good special effects.

Ringu just looked cheap. And I don't see how it was dumbed down at all. It's the same damn thing.

pffft. i thought their work on a limited budget was very impressive. the plot was quite different, because stuff that was supposed to remain vague and mysterious in ringu was explained in implausible and immemorable ways. i thought some of the characters lacked a depth necessary to retain the eerie paranormal feel of ringu, which rendered it a bit more generic. but maybe thats just my opinion. =\

I second spa ced's In the Mouth of Madness recommendation. I don't remember being scared by it, but it's an engrossing movie from what I recall.

I also second sickbadthing's Exit to Eden recommendation. I was heterosexual and alpha-male material before the sight of Rosie O'Donnell in a leather dominatrix outfit turned me gay and nebbish.

And I put forth the original Exorcist. If you're not one of those people who finds it hilariously anachronistic, then you'll be scared of it. It's really not so shocking for these times, but it touches on some metaphysical fears for viewers who are religious.
