For starters, the T41 uses the first generation Pentium-M, built on a 130nm core and reaching max speeds of 1.7GHz. The T42 uses the new 90nm core and goes from 1.5GHz to 2.00GHz.

The T42 seems to be the only one with the option of the Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics if you want to do any gaming. I've also heard that the 15" screen (on both) is very slow, so if you want to do any gaming or watch any movies, you'd be better off with the faster (and brighter) 14.1" model.

With the Radeon 7500 you only get XGA resolution (1024x768).
With the 9000 and 9600 you only get SXGA+ (1400x1050).
And with the FireGL you can get either SXGA+ or UXGA (1600x1200).

Depending on configuration they can weigh anywhere from 4.5 to 5.8lbs, not bad.

kickass. i don't plan on doing any gaming, but i'll defintely watch dvds. would you recommend the 1400 x 1050?

how about upgrading to 512mb RAM? good idea? i think i'll get 1.7 P-M

um.. hard drive speed 7200, size 60gb is better than a slower 80 gb?

i wish they had a dvd burner available..

would you recommend the high capacity battery?

thanks man, you know your shit!

I recommend 1400x1050 over 1024x768. As far as recommending it over 1600x1200, that's hard. I prefer 1600x1200, but it's too small for some people.
Yeah, I strongly recommend getting 512MB of ram, 256 just doesn't cut it with WinXP. However, it's probably cheaper for you to upgrade from www.crucial.com than from IBM, so check prices. Opening the box to install your own ram will most likely void your warranty though.

Surprisingly, 7200rpm drives don't take a lot more battery power than 5400rpm ones, but they do offer a good performance increase, so yeah, go faster.

You can always get an external DVD burner, they're pretty inexpensive these days.

The battery is up to you. It'll add weight for sure, and if it's like the Dell ones, it may also increase the physical size (the option for mine makes it stick out the back of the notebook). Look at IBM's battery life ratings, and then figure out situations in which you'll be using the notebook. If you usually use it at home or the office where you'll always have access to an outlet, battery life isn't super important.

exxxcellent! do you think it's necessary to go higher than 512mb? the most memory intensive things i think i'd be doing would be watching dvds, ripping cds..

other than that, mostly just business shit.

i'm going to upgrade through ibm even though it's a ripoff, so i don't violate the warranty.

how about wireless adaptors.. i just went with what they recommended (intel pro/wireless 2200bg mini pci adaptor).. for like $20 there was some cisco shit, but i have no idea what that is all about, so im assuming it's not necessary.

thanks again!

For what you've listed, 512 is fine. More than that will only make a difference in graphics apps like Photoshop or in new games like Farcry (which you won't play with those video cards anyway :) ) But if you can get a gig for a decent price, might as well go for it. Better to have it and not need it...well you know the rest.

I've had no issues with the PRO/Wireless, so I say go for that. If it's G also then bonus.

tiight. ordering through IBM will take 2-4 weeks, yet i see it configured just how i want it on buy.com (only difference being they only have the standard battery), and they can ship in 1-2 business days..

can you think of any disadvantages of buying through buy.com as opposed to ibm? the warranty appears to be the same...

hey man, one more set of q's for you..

for the T41 it says:

Processor 1
(Std) Intel Pentium M processor at 1.7GHz with 1MB L2 Cache

Display Type
(Std) 14.1 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT Display

for the T42 is says:

Processor 1
(Std) Intel Pentium M Processor 735 (1.7GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB)

Display Type
(Std) 14.1 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT Display

so.. I have no idea what the difference in those processors is.. can you fill me in? the differences is only $90.

also, it appears that with the T42, for $150, you have the option of a multi-burner, and in the T41 you don't have that option.. i'm assuming the multiburner does dvds and cds, is that right?

The T42 is using the new Dothan core (90nm) and the T41 is using the original Pentium-M with the 130nm core. The extra L2 cache will give a nice performance boost, and is definitely worth the $90.

And yeah, the multi-burner is a DVD+/-RW drive.

I can't believe I missed the cache part yesterday, sorry :\

ok, sweet. i think im all set to order now! T42 it is, w/ dual burner. costs a little more than i wanted, oh well. for now im not going to get the high capacity battery, i think it adds some size/weight i don't want, i'll have it plugged in most of the time anyways.

THANKS FOR HELPING ME FIGURE THIS OUT!!!

Let me say this: I have no clue what that nonesense all means, but I had a ThinkPad for three years and absolutely adored it.

i hope ibm doesn't plan on dicking around as much as their estimate says.. it says expected to ship by 8/16!! P|C said they really overestimate, so hopefully it's all good.
