Both Pitchfork and the PFMS message board are coming out with their lists of the top albums of the 1980's some time this week, and I am curious to see what the same list would look like from Netphorians.

If you're interested, you can either PM me your list or post it here--I don't really care. Please don't make lists any longer than twenty albums. Also, please either rank them in order or indicate that you want them to all have the same weight.

10. Stone Roses - Stone Roses
09. REM - Murmur
08. The Cure - Disintegration
07. Talking Heads - Remain in Light
06. The Smiths - Meat Is Murder
05. My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything
04. Joy Division - Closer
03. Pixies - Doolittle
02. New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
01. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Power, Corruption & Lies would've been #1 if "Leave Me Alone" had been the closing track. Stupid "The Beach" for being unnecessary. Oh, and I should probably be flamed for having the Stone Roses so low and Isn't Anything probably doesn't even deserve to be on the list, but this is just my personal preference.

Save for the Tom Waits, the Pitchfork list was fairly predictable. My issues -

1) The Soft Boys were far too high up at 65 when UM is easily in the top20 if not top10.
2) Replacements should have been in the top10
3) Predictability of Daydream Nation at #1 as well as the two Pixies records in the top10.
4) What happened to synth-pop? Duran Duran doesn't cover it as Depeche Mode, Yaz, and Erasure are all integral.
5) Too much Police. They were good, not sure if I'd call them great.

Not a perfect list but at least a decent representation of the decade. In case anyone's interested here are two other best of the 80s lists I've found -

wot no pixies, new order, joy division, sonic youth, bunnymen or smiths - for a man whose musical opinions i usually share that's a surprise. and surely as an outright thrill ride rock record nothings shocking shits on the corporate hair metal of appetite..?
