I know there was a thread on this a couple weeks ago, but I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it and now I'm wondering about 4-tracks myself.
If anyone could direct me to some noteworthy models, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm looking for something basic enough for a beginner (I have no experience), but nice enough to make some halfway decent recordings. And I'm really just interested in an actual tangible 4-track; using the computer doesn't really interest me at this point. Thanks.

Thanks. I'm looking into the Tascam. Musician's Friend has it for $100, or I could get a start-up package with a pair of headphones and a microphone for $140.

I would not waste my money on the cheap ones, if you are going to get a 4-track go ahead and shell out the extra one or two hundred bucks and get the best 4track tascam or yamaha has, its either the 424 tascam or the yamaha equivalent. The small ones have lots of noise, not enough inputs and they suck for mixing down.

i agree.
my friend has a cheapie one, and it sounds like absoloute shit. everything has a really loud analogue hiss over it, so it sounds like he recorded at the top of a windy mountain.
go for the 424. i have one, it works perfectly.
