I had the following silly thought, and then decided to share:
A big part of the respect people had for Maynard / Tool is derived from their standpoint and views on media and society, which is not favourable. This is one of the reasons why you love them! Now, Maynard not only talks the talk, but walks the walk and people don’t like it.
Well, boo fucking hoo.
Honestly, I mean, he and the band express a distrust with the effect and actions of media and society, and everyone is like ‘YO, THAT’S SO COOL!’ but when he actually proves it’s more then just talk, like those other idiots who say the same things, his actions are now shunned?
I’m sure if you no longer like his attitude you have your reasons, but please be aware of the hypocritical aspect of what you’re feeling.
Understand what I'm trying to say?
Wow, I care too much! Cool.

i don't think people are turning a cold shoulder to tool/a perfect circle because of social or political issues, i think its because their music is totally boring & lame.

i used to really like him, but i'm pretty sick of him now, cuz he's basically sold out (yeah, i know you think i'm an idiot after saying that, let me explain). he starts out by making the amazing "aenima" and sucessfully blasting people who think he's sold out on "hooker with a penis." then what does he do? he turns right around and gradually starts to become a parody of himself. maybe other people can't see it yet, but it should become very apparent soon.. it's pretty sad.. i mean this is the kind of lame thing that happens to bands like counting crows or metallica or something. it's bad enough that he's becoming a parody of himself (release a shred of a lyric that doesn't both proclaim how tortured he is and also how much metaphysical hope there is? NEVER!) but what really makes me mad about him is his bullshit "you can't steal my music" thing. whenever a musician starts thinking like that so much that he comes out and starts criticizing his own goddamn fans for wanting to hear his music, you can bet a hefty sum that there's some major musical sucking in the near future. he could take a lesson from billy corgan, who embraced GIVING to his fans, and never became a parody of himself.. what a concept. his next album should be about as goth-core as evanescence :D

yep, it's about him selling out...not his standpoint on media & society. he's done a complete 180.

How is Maynard a parody of himself? He pretty much quit dressing up as he got older and now he likes to sit in the shadows and sing, big deal. From what you have said about his lyrics I'm guessing you hardly read them.
People worry so much about the image of these people putting out music. I try to concentrate more on the music.

no i'm saying i think HE'S overly concerned with his image now... everything he does is to look all goth and scary and dark and wise.. i mean fuck, give me a break. a picture of the pumpkins eating fries in a restaurant was more touching than what he's doing now
but i still like his music... he's got a lot of talent. he just needs to umm... take the ego down a few notches :)

Ummm I don't think he is trying to be anything now. He used to dress up as a preacher, a woman, paint himself...all kinds of shit. Now that he stops and does nothing but stand there and sing you say he is MORE worried about his image? I think he is more worried about his music now and his image less. I can see how you call him a prick for loving to make money, maybe he is an ass because he hates and avoids the media, maybe you don't like him because he doesn't sing autographs or meet with fans but I can not understand how you say he has "sold out". Oh well...I think about 80% of netphoria is musically retarded so I really have no place to argue here. I'll try to quit.

So what? Would you rather him not believe in what he is saying? Whats wrong with being a very mental and spiritual person? I take my own music very seriously.

Well I don't think Maynard or Tool made their riches by selling out, they made it by producing good music which sold lots of albums and concert tickets.
As far as merch, every band sells something and its all overpriced. I don't buy anyone except tickets and cds, to me there is no reason to buy a $30 shirt(just about all concert shirts are $30 these days) or join a fan club, listening to the music is my reward. As far as $40 shows....heh I wish it was jus Tool and APC charging this, sadly its most everyone. I paid $180 for my ticket to Bonnaroo, inflation is a bitch. Especially after insurance companies started cracking down on venues, all tickets started to go up even more.
As far as enjoying making money and being rich, if I was able to I'd be there right beside him. If people are willing to throw money at me I'm going to get as good at catching it as I can. Funny, now people like to rag on others about being successful.

that's right that they have sold lots of albums and made money. so why does maynard care so much if someone downloads his songs? he needs to focus on the music, not getting richer

Because its against the law. Its copyright infringement which doesn't only apply to music, but also several other types of art and business. Why should people get something for free when they put a lot of hard work and money into making it? I fucking hate illegal file sharing and I think it should only be used for authorized live shows. Its not just about money, ya know there is a principle behind stealing music and why its wrong.
