View Full Version : Interpretation: Soma

I've always looked at Soma as a m,etaphor as a vicious circle of drugs or love. Starting off really dreamy, ...like being high or being in love, with the lyrics suggesting dissatisfaction.

I believe Billy said Soma was about the false sense of security that love brings around, just like drugs. Anyhow, nice and dreamy and then the distortion kicks in. I think of this as the parting from drugs or a significant other....loud, angry, and sad with the same dissatisfied vibe, yet with the subject trying to grasp the finality of it.

And last, back into that dreamy state...which I've always thought of the turn back to a relationship or drugs, which is the only way to really fill the hole that either one has left...with the last sigh saying "I give up".

I don't know why I'm posting about this, just thought I would throw my interpretation your way.

/Max

I think you might have something there. But since Billy never had a Siamese Dream Mystery contest, we will never truly know what he was symbolizing when he wrote that song.

ummm....I thought Billy once said it was about being betrayed by someone you love. I could totally be making that up though. But if I'm right, I can see how that could (sort of) relate to the drug, in that it can make you drowsy/lull you into a false sense of security/whatever. But I doubt that Billy said, "okay, well now that I made the first three minutes of this song soft and slow like when you're on drugs, I'm going to jam out like I'm going through the pain of withdrawl from drugs/people".

No, but I believe he named it Soma because it gives you that false sense of security, like "Soma", which is just a drug.

It's about the girlfriend who left me last year. I tried to put all my anger in those words, even though I'm just as much to blame for the break-up. 'Soma' is based on the idea that a love relationship is almost the same as opium: it slowly puts you to sleep, it soothes you, and gives you the illusion of sureness and security. Very deceivable." - on "Soma"

Yes. I mean, of all the songs to "interpret," why pick Soma? It's more straightforward than plenty of their songs.
