CNN article (http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/americas/05/14/cuba.us.march.ap/index.html)

"Castro said 1 million people showed up."

Seriously does anyone care what Castro has to say? This is a serious question because I don't know if he has a decent reputation anywhere. But if Bush gets re-elected and we invade Cuba I'm going to jump off a cliff. No fucking joke.

Aren't they protesting over something involving the closing of general stores which sold things for dollars instead of the cuban form of currency?

I know, but I'd hate to see us destroy their country at all because I think it's so lovely. And it's so removed from American culture, so even if it's repressed at least it's a unique place. I'd hate to see us make it into a little America, it just seems like a big loss. Fairly uninformed and dumb reasons, eh? I should go ahead and admit that politics aren't my string point. That's why I wish someone could tell me about Castro's image outside of America and if he has any reasonable supporters.

Not exactly what you were asking for, but read this piece - it's fairly interesting:
http://members.allstream.net/~dchris/CubaFAQ024.html

The thing about Cuba is that the US has been screwing them over for decades, making life as difficult as possible by imposing direct and indirect embargoes. I'd be really interested to see how the country would have progressed if it had not been held back in this way - the healthcare system alone is pretty incredible.

The problem with supporting Castro is that, in an international sense, this means not supporting the US - and in this kind of either/or situation people are reluctant. Recent human rights infractions in Cuba seemed to disappoint people too (given the progress which was being made) which doesn't help his image. It's hard to say what the general consensus is... you hear negatives like this and also positives.
