Greed is bad. However:

Selfishness = incentive = progress = mutually benefitial exchange = prosperity.

Because of the above (simplified) formula, the United States has been the spearhead of the civilized world. The rest of the world would still be farming feifs if it weren't for the US and the principles by which it was founded.

Don't you have an opinion Matt? What kind of purpose does "discuss" as your post serve? You can say that the U.S. is greedy but how in the hell can you discount every other person in the world for not being greedy? Some have more than others. Boo fucking hoo.

Do you realize how stupid posting "discuss" is in a thread you create and then say nothing else?

By the way, greed is completely subjective.

the workers must also exhibit selfishness in order to check the selfishness of their employers. if they are not afforded this ability, you'd have to believe the system would collapse under its own weight. there'd be no opposing pressure.

building off of that - it's the areas that cannot exhibit their selfishness that will suffer in this scenario. e.g. - nature and the environment can't really fight back, so it's quite easy to exploit and damage them.

however, there are those whose greatest priority is protecting the environment (and other "entities" that cannot protect themselves). Those people can take action in a free society to educate others about the importance of those "entities."

You are right. That is why I do support minimal environmental regulation. However, I also agree that people do/will see that something liek the environment cannot be messed with, and our survival as a species is dependant upon co-existing with it.

Also, even nature can protect itself, unfortuanetly it would probably be with the complete destruction of most life on thsi earth, or at least the reduction of life to a primitive state.
