View Full Version : reccomend bands on indie labels that don't sound indie
bonsor 04-23-2004, 03:02 PM i've always been sort of been perplexed by the fact that most indie bands i've heard all have that same, clean guitar sound with that same clean drum sound as if something in their record contract barres them from using guitar overdubs.
so i ask you if can you give me examples of prog rock sounding bands on indie labels.
Irrelevant 04-23-2004, 05:14 PM haha. Mars Volta is on Universal though.
Mayfuck 04-23-2004, 05:26 PM Are the Decemberists on an indie label? They sound pretty generic and shitty and boring, er I mean that is to say they don't sound indie. Walkmen are pretty shitt--er uh un-indie sounding too if that's what you're going for.

this is the confusion thats always with this label of "indie". semantically it means independant, but its just associated so much with that "indie" sound youre referring to, which 9 times out of 10 is boring shit. those kinda of indie bands are indie for a reason; because theyre not good enough to satisfy their big label ambitions and dont have the know-how or resources to make themselves sound any different. but fuck man, the world of independant music is ten times in size, variety, and quality to that of the popular music world, so dont think that any "indie" band is going to sound like that and stop looking.
i dont know what to recommend exactly, but just going by what i think is your taste:
the dead science (highly recommend)
blonde redhead
the constantines
do make say think
and as a musician, youll at the least get a kick out of:
hella
the mars volta
rockets red glare

shaniqua 04-24-2004, 01:25 AM ******, you'd like the constantines.
i can't fucking stand them, they're the most overrated pile of overrattedness in the toronto indie "scene" but i think they may be your thing.

the dead science (highly recommend)i thought i was the only person on the board who liked them. sean casey told me i was an idiot when i namedropped them, so i thought i must be on the right track.

Egadsman 04-26-2004, 10:10 AM Ted Leo & The Pharmacists?
They are actually good, as apposed to a lot of the suggestions, thus far.
if you are 04-26-2004, 10:57 AM forget every other indie-type band, and just listen to cursive. they kick everyone's ass
