NEW YORK (AP) -- Starship may have built this city on rock and roll, but Blender magazine is tearing it down, naming the band's "We Built This City" as the worst song ever.

Some tunes on the "50 Worst Songs Ever!" list were selected for their melodies, others "are wretchedly performed" and "quite a few don't make sense whatsoever," the magazine said.

The list, which appears in the May issue, *******s songs by New Kids on the Block, Meat Loaf, The Doors, Lionel Richie, Hammer and The Beach Boys, among others.

Blender describes 1985's "We Built This City" as "the truly horrible sound of a band taking the corporate dollar while sneering at those who take the corporate dollar."

Starship lead singer Grace Slick says, "This is not me," when the magazine reminds her of the tune. "Now you're an actor. It's the same as Meryl Streep playing Joan of Arc."

Rounding out the top 10: "Achy Breaky Heart," Billy Ray Cyrus; "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Wang Chung; "Rollin'," Limp Bizkit; "Ice Ice Baby," Vanilla Ice; "The Heart of Rock & Roll," Huey Lewis and the News; "Don't Worry Be Happy," Bobby McFerrin; "Party All the Time," Eddie Murphy; "American Life," Madonna; and "Ebony and Ivory," Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.

Other songs on the list: Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" (No. 22); Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All" (No. 30); Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" (No. 39); Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" (No. 41); Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sounds of Silence" (No. 42); The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (No. 48); and Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" (No. 50).

Blender and VH1's TV special "50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs ... Ever" airs May 12.

You know how you get demo songs on keyboard? It was the demo song on my oldest keyboard, I suppose I associate it with that.

Yeah, I like it a lot, too. My brother has always listed it in his most hated songs, but I took it as he just wasn't a Beatles fan. I really didn't know there were people out there with a vendetta against it.

About the half the songs on the list are realy bad and deserve to be on their. Alot of them are just pop songs nothiing bad about them they jsut are not good. Some of them dont belong on there at all. You can tell they just put certain songs on there just to piss people off and get them talking, which worked.

From VH1.com

"This week on VH1 the 100 greatest VH1 100 greatest list. Will the 100 greatest albums be #1 or will it be the 100 greatest Artists of all time. Where will the 100 greatest divas fall on the list.

Hosted by the guy who played Chekhov (at this point even Shatner thinks these lists are lame)

With commentaries by:

A bunch of stand up comics you never heard of who can't get work anywhere else.

That guy who played guitar in that band, come on you know that band that broke, he played that awesome solo, oh man why can't I think of his name.

Two women from some morning radio show you have never heard and will never hear.

Andy Dick

A bunch of bands who just formed 2 months ago, have had one minor hit and will talk about music like they know what they are talking about."

1. Starship – We Built This City

this is a great list actually. they've covered all the bases. american life was the worst song of last year. an american idol song is pretty up there. puff daddy, the worst hip hop artist ever, is there, and though they didn't put his worst track they put his biggest hit which is great. your body is a wonderland, the greatest love of all, the final countdown, achy breaky heart, rolling, cotton eye joe, two princes - i was thinking of all these before i saw the list and they would be on my personal list. when 'the only thing that looks good on me is you' came out i was job shadowing at a radio station and the entire staff was dumbfounded how bad it was and that station played bryan adams all the time. kokomo is my best friend's least favorite song ever. whenever breakfeast at tiffany's comes on i tell people it's my least favorite song ever and people are like 'why? it's great' and i don't get why no one understands that. and they put a few good songs to be controversial for good measure. nice work. ***** 'superman' should've been something by matchbox 20 instead though.

all magazines fundamentally suck, but blender is way better than rolling stone

That Crash Test Dummies song was incredible...

..but it makes me wonder, shouldn't there be a Weird Al song on this list?
