View Full Version : WTF? I just got a letter from the Collection Agency (attn: CANADIANS)

It says I owe 300 dollars for an emergency hospital visit I had last year. I had UHIP (I payed 700 dollars to my university for health insurance for the entire year) at the time and used it. So I don't fucking get it. SOSHALIZED MEDICINES = I DON'T PAY FOR THIS SHIT BECAUSE I HAD UHIP.

if you go to an emergency room in the United States without insurance, you will get a bill in the thousands.

No fucking duh. She's American, dumbass.

But the fact is, she PAID FOR HER INSURANCE, AND SO, IS IN DANGER OF GETTING SCREWED ROYALLY BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE THEY FUCKED UP.

Clear for ya?

Here's the breakdown:

Your insurance pays the bulk of the bill, which is actually in the thousands. However, a small portion comes out of your pocket every time you go to the hospital, use ambulances, etc. If you go to a clinic, it's still free. However, you don't pay for tests in hospitals, but you do in clinics.

Hospital collections agencies MUST be paid, or they do drag your ass to court.

ok, but the only reason I went to the hospital ( I didn't take an ambulance either, I staggered in there) was to get treated for a 103.7 fever that I'd had for days and the fact that I couldn't keep anything down for the previous week and a half. Later (from another doctor) I found out I had a bad infection, but they just gave me some gravol and fluids through IV. I didn't have a heart attack, I didn't get x-rays, I talked to the doctor for a total of about 7 minutes.

also, it was just the walk in clinic part of the hospital.

And I have to pay 300 for that? Then why did I bother to purchase insurance? Fuck them. I called the woman and she told me not to worry and that it wouldnm't ruin my credit so long as I got in touch with the fucking insurance. So I called them and got a fucking answering machine. Of course.

anyway, thanks for the reply, Shawna. http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/smile.gif

And just so you know, you got ripped off by your university for insurance. My university's insurance is $144 for the year.

Your insurance probably covers prescription drugs (80%), eyeglasses, dental cleanings, etc. Those companies usually cover 80% of the cost of whatever. You should check your policy. Cause I think that's what they told me last year when I went on the Carleton open house in a state of panic about being cut off from my dad's cushy insurance.

No, International students at McGill have to pay more for their insurance. It's about 500 dollars. The $144 is only for Canadian students and it's optional if you're covered by other insurance companies.

hmm. i am sketchy as to the overall workings of the canadian health care plan, but if it's anything at all like my insurance - they won't pay for an emergency room visit unless the doctor actually deems it an emergency. is it possible that they didn't see it as an emergency and so they don't want to foot the bill?

Check your policy. Then check your bill. The policy should state what it will and will not cover. Normally you would check this before going to the hospital...but your obviously haven't dealt with insurance that often (that is not a cut). Check to see what the policy covers, and compare to what is on your bill. If you do not have a bill then call the hospital and have them send you another one.

Don't worry about the collection agency. These sorts of things can and will get removed from your credit report within 90 days. So hopefully you aren't buying a house or a car between now and then.

I feel your pain for nonsense bills, Des. Sprint charged me $144 for shutting off my cell phone. http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/frown.gif Even after my contract was up.

gross. Dude, living on your own is overrated. so is getting sick when your mommy, a nurse, isn't around to buy you comics and make you drink gatorade http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/frown.gif

Thanks for the advice, man. I just don't understand why they would fuck students, who probably aren't the richest assholes in the world. As I recall, this is from the time I went in for a bladder infection.

I pissed in a cup.

They tested my piss.

I got a prescription for some medicine that cost me $4.00. That's it. Where the $300 expense for me comes in, I don't really understand. Maybe if the prescription were for a heart disorder or prepping me for brain surgery, ok, but doing something cranberry juice could have probably taken care of? Fuck.

Anyway, I will call the hospital tomorrow as well as my insurance company (AGAIN) and then the collection agency. If what you say about my credit is true, then that relieves a hell of a lot of stress for me. I just got to this country. I don't need to have my credit fucked already.

yeah http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/frown.gif I <3 meow for sticking up for me!

I asked the collection agency the time of the hospital visit and they say it was probably before january. Which means it was the time when Duncan drove me in a really bad ice storm right before Christmas because IT BURNED WHEN I (TRIED TO) PEED. God damn that shit hurts. I just gave them my insurance card and was like "FIX MY WEE-WEE http://www.netphoria.org/wwwboard/frown.gif."

As you progress through life and have to worry about things like health insurance....which I am guessing she will from now on, you would normally read the policy when you sign up for it in order to understand what you are paying for. As an example, when one goes through the selection process for a PPO or an HMO they would want to understand what the key differences are between the two coverages....i.e., what will be covered and what won't. I don't know about you, but I try to check on things before I pay for them. But maybe you just don't do that yet either.

Thank you for your point and input though.

The thing that gets me about it is that THIS IS CANADA. I could understand if it were the U.S.. I was lucky to grow up with a mother in the health care business so none of us had to worry about going to the doctor or the hospital. When I bought my insurance, they didn't go over policies. They told me that the school covered 80 percent of my prescriptions and that whenever I went to the doctor or hospital, I only had to bring my health card adn my student card. And the hospital never informed me of extra charges. They do in the states from all of my experiences (when it's time to pay or whatever, they ask you for the bloody money).

Regardless of all this crap, THEY HOSPTIAL OR MY INSURANCE COMPANY SHOULD HAVE INFORMED ME OF THE BALANCE I OWED BEFORE THEY CONTACTED THE COLLECTION AGENCY. I mean, what the hell? NOBODY told me ANYTHING and I had no idea until I got this threatening letter from the collection agency.

a bad revival, but... a reminder that she's Canadian, fuckwit.
